United States, “sorry” has a few widely used meanings.“sorry”这个词在英国的含义和别处完全不一样。 (1) As a form of apology. Im sorry I kicked your shin.(1)用来道歉。 (2) As an expression of sympathy. Im sorry

、 for your loss.(2)表达同情。 (3) As an adjective meaning inadequate. You are a sorry specimen.(3)形容“不合适”。 To these, the British add说到这儿,英国人要补充一句(4) As an interjection meaning “I didnt hear you, could you repeat that?”(4)用作插入语“我没听清,你能重复一下吗?”A: Lie nuff cacophany?“谎话连篇?”B: Sorry?“抱歉能再说一遍吗

、?”A: I said, would you like another cup of coffee?“我说,你再来杯咖啡吗?”Im terribly sorry but were just doing it to be polite. Much like Japan, when your country develops its sense of manners under a system where armed warriors are the norm (knights/samurai), you tend to establish patterns of speech designed

、 to reduce aggression. At this point the swords are more or less gone, but the speech patterns are traditional and cultural so we carry on carrying on. Sorry if that doesnt ill

、uminate it for you. 5 Royal Family Mothers Day Traditions You Probably Have Too, and 1 You Definitely Dont英国王室母亲节的6个传统,其中一个你肯定做不到Mothers Day is on May 12 this year, but for our friends across the pond, its already come and gone (it was on March 31 in the UK). And s

、ince the royal family is currently busy with all things royal baby, you may not have noticed their very low-key celebrations. In the UK, Mothers Day is traditionally known as Mothering Sunday because it revolv

、es around church. And while the royals may go all out and have fancy photo ops for other church holidays like Christmas, Mothers Day is a lot quieter they usually all stay out of the public eye. On this day, theyre a lot more like us! Since they already celebrated, keep reading to find out exactly w

、hat they do to get inspiration for your own mom or mum! There actually arent a ton of things the monarchy does on t

、his special day. In fact, more often than not, they stay out of the public eye and spend quality time with family as they should! Last year, for example, Prince Harry brought then-fiance Meghan Markle to see the queen, and they were only photographed out and about the next day, which was Commonwealt

、h Day. 2 Give Flowers to Their Mums2 送上鲜花Since the beginning of the Mothering Sunday holiday, children have given their mums flowers and small gifts, and the royal family sticks with this tradi

、tion. Flowers are usually at the top of the list for all British families on this holiday, but cards and gifts have made their way into the celebration in more recent years. 3 Release Photos to the Public3 发个“朋友圈”Although

、this doesnt happen every year, the royal family have been known to release unseen photos to the public on Mothers Day. For example, Prince William and his family released an adorable family photo on Mothers Day back in 20XX when it was just little Prince George and his parents. In 2018, the royal fa

、mily unveiled a never-before-seen picture of Queen Elizabeth II and her family including all of her children and husband Prince Philip at their more private residence, Frogmore, from 1965. Its basically our version of Facebook photos.

4 Spend Time With Their Mothers4 共度美好时光Like all children try and do, the royal family spend time with their respective mothers on this special day. Kate Middleton has been kn

、own to spend time with her royal side of the family and then head out to Berkshire to see her own mother, Carole Middleton. Some of the royal family even attend events together with their moms, like Zara Tindall and Princess Anne, who love to attend any and all horse races/shows together in the Spri

、ng. 5 Spend Time at Frogmore5 在Frogmore享受时光While the royal family doesnt disclose where they spend time on all of their holidays, they have reportedly spent nume

、rous special occasions at Frogmore House, which is where this Mothers Day photo was taken many moons ago. Its known as a favorite royal retreat, and its where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took their engagement photos and where they live. This is one tradition we cant really relate to since most pe

、ople dont have multiple estates! You cant have Mothering Sunday without attending church. Over the years, the queen has been spotted a

、t mass at numerous locations, including churches in Sussex and Windsor, and we wouldnt expect anything less. People who are English wont care英格兰人不介意Welsh will care and think youre an idiot威尔士人会介意并认为你是白痴S

、cots will really care, and think you an idiot苏格兰人真的会介意并认为你是白痴Roughly 50% of people in Northern Ireland will really, really care and think youre either an idiot or being deliberately provocative几乎50%的北爱尔兰人真的真的会介意,认为你要么是白痴,要么是故意挑衅So its not a great strategy. Use “British” if you have to use only one w

、ord. For Northern Ireland, Id always say “Northern Irish” though this has the potential to annoy some unionists/loyalists. Better to take that risk than to say “British” to nationalists/republicans though.

I am British, and born in England. If people call me English and referring to me as being born in England, but if they are referring to my nationality, it annoys me. I am British, and have British citizenship. The Queen is the Queen of the United Kingdom, but can, informally, be called the B

、ritish Queen. People who call her the Queen of England are uneducated, as there has not been an English Queen since the Act of Union in 1707. The problem stems

、 from a lack of understanding between the differences of the United Kingdom, Great Britain, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It doesnt help that we have four separate teams in both Football and Rugby. People arent taught the difference at school abroad and maybe they should be.

Depends which of the four countries theyre from. If you refer to an English person as being from England, then no. However, if theyre from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, they will be most definite

、ly annoyed. The name UK is more of a political umbrella term that covers all four countries, but the individual country names represent history and culture. Any citizen can be referred to as from the UK, but to be honest theyd probably prefer being referred to as from England, Scotland, Wales or N.

、Ireland. If they have an obvious recognisable accent, use one of the four to describe them. If they dont, stay safe and say U.K. or British. Theyll probably tell you where theyre from, and then you say English, Scottish, Welsh or N. Irish. But never refer to someone who is definitely from Scotland,

、Wales or N. Ireland as from England, cause youll come across as ignorant and offend them.
