31、f the chain lengths C8 to C22 can be obtained from natural fats and oils such as coconut oil,palm oil,olive oil,beef and mutton tallow and others by hydrolysis or methanolysis followed by hydrogenation of the resultant acids or methyl estersPetrochemical linear,even carbon number,saturated fatty alc
32、ohols in the chain length range C6 to C20 can be obtained by the Ziegler process from oligomerisation of ethylene with aluminum alkyl catalysts,followed by hydrolysis.Examples of Ziegler alcohol commercial names are Nafol,Alfol,Nacol.Semi-linear fatty alcohols such as Neodol alcohols can be synthesi
33、zed by ethylene oligomerisation to-olefins followed by selective hydroformylation of the obtained olefins.Such alcohols have a content of primary,linear and saturated alcohols of approx.80%.Methyl branching occurs mostly in the position 2 to the hydroxyl group,Ethoxylates,Several different grades of
34、 fatty alcohols are available for ethoxylation(2).,The conventional oxo alcohols are generally produced on the basis of kerosene.A paraffin flow is isolated,dehydrogenated to olefins and subsequently hydroformylated.The fatty alcohols obtained by this process contain approximately 50%primary,linear,
35、saturated fatty alcohols.The alcohol product flow can be split into linear and branched portions.Lial is one of the trade names for these alcohols.In addition to these generally mono branched fatty alcohols,there are multiple branched fatty alcohols.These are obtained by oligomerisation of propene a
36、nd/or butenes.Normal chain lengths for such alcohols are C6 to C15(e.g.isononanol,isodecanol and isotridecanol),Ethoxylates,Several different grades of fatty alcohols are available for ethoxylation(3).,A new class of fatty alcohols became accessible by the hydroformylation of olefins that are obtain
37、ed in the Fischer-Tropsch(FT)process from synthesis gas.In contrast to known fatty alcohols these fatty alcohols have structural specialties.Thus,the average branching degree is approx.50%(the same as for the conventional oxoalcohols),but the branching does not occur only in the 2-position or 3-posi
38、tion to the hydroxyl group.Because of their structural diversities these alcohols are still under evaluation by the major soapers.Their approval is not guaranteed at the moment and there are rumours of manufacturing issues which makes their future and long term availability uncertain.,Ethoxylates,Fa
39、tty alcohols ethoxylates are geared to the use of the downstream formulated products.,Linear,vegetable origin fatty alcohols are demanded for ethoxylates used in personal care formulations,either as such or as intermediates for sulphationThe household detergent industry uses interchangeably ethoxyla
40、tes from Linear,natural fatty alcohols(animal or vegetable origin,although vegetable are preferred)Ziegler fatty alcoholsSemi-linear fatty alcoholsSasols FT fatty alcohols are relatively new products and require more formulation adjustment than the other categories.As such they are still under devel
41、opment.The branching gives better solubility in cold water(an advantage for prevailing domestic detergent formulation trends)and there are indications that they have interesting features in industrial applications.We have received reports however that there are production problems and that,in conseq
42、uence,the long term availability is questionable The above and the other types of fatty alcohols are used in industrial and institutional cleaning,crop protection and other industrial applications,on the basis of cost,availability,specific performance characteristics,Ethoxylates,Detergent alcohols b
43、ased on FT olefins may in future become more important.,The economic viability of detergent alcohols based on FT olefins might in time become a more attractive source of detergent alcohols than those based on ethylene(because FT feedstocks are not dependent on the oil price)Since only Sasol produces
44、 FT detergent alcohols on a commercial scale it is not at this point in time clear whether the technical hurdles associated with using these alcohols can be overcomeIt is our recommendation to SABIC that this situation be monitored in depth,From a broad choice a few grades should be singled-out for
45、initial manufacture.,Ethoxylates,From the range of fatty alcohols available and the flexibility in the degree of ethoxylation a large number of grades is theoretically possibleIn practice we recommend that initially the grades shown in table below are manufactured,Ethoxylates from conventional oxo a
46、lcohols,multiple branched alcohols and possibly FT alcohols can be considered for manufacture in stage 2 depending upon demand in the market region(s)chosenPresent design basis is using fatty alcohol C12-C15,SABIC needs to use a gradual approach focusing on quality to establish itself in targeted ma
47、rkets.,SABIC will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the manufacturing processes,experiment at the pilot plant level for the more complex grades and develop the market contacts for the downstream sales of the products Starting a new production unit is a complex task,which demands a gradu
48、al approachFirst priority is to achieve a production stream of products with a quality at least initially matching that of the main competitorsWhat is perhaps more important than absolute quality is consistency of quality,i.e.small,almost negligible deviations from a standard benchmarkSABIC needs to
49、:Ensure efficiency of manufacturing processesGain support of an“alkoxylation expert”Start production with a few grades only which will allow goals to be metBegin as a niche player in the new targeted marketsStay on track with the mapped out stages of production,Ethoxylates,A detailed profile for an
