2、million city dwellers breathes air that would be considered safe in Europe.At a time when arable land is in short supply,poisoned floodwaters have ruined many productive fields.Last year,ahead of most forecasts,China passed the U.S.to become the worlds largest source of greenhouse gases.,2,Efforts,I
3、n part spurred by an ambitious 2005 Renewable Energy Law,china is also quietly positioning itself as a player in the renewable energy sector,and many environmentalists are unabashedly optimistic.China intends to lead the low-carbon race,it has so far invested some$12 billion in renewable energy more
4、 than than any other country in the world except Germany.And it plans to double the proportion of renewable energy to 15 percent by 2020.Now three-fourths of Chinese electricity is from coal,however,Chinas heavy dependence on coal is a legacy of the past.Chinas leaders see it as a necessity,not an a
5、chievement.Renewable energy sources,are seen by many Chinese leaders as the key to the countrys economic future and national security,Pro-renewables policies have advanced rapidly in recent years.,3,Crossroads,China faces no other choice but to shift to a low-carbon pathway,in order to meet its futu
6、re social and economic development targets.Nearly 350 million rural Chinese are expected to move into urban areas over the next two decades,as a result,the country will need to introduce and enforce strict standards of energy efficiency for building and electronic appliances.Need to reduce carbon em
7、issions from the residential sector and vigorously develop public mass transportation to prevent a massive increase in carbon emissions from the transport sector.Most of the energy-consuming assets needed between now and 2020 have yet to be built,Chinas success in moving towards low-carbon development will be shaped by the types of investments,choices of technologies and organisational decisions that are made in the near future.,4,Thank You!,
