2、opera is regarded asthe national opera in China and called“daxi”(大戏),Beijing opera originated in the late 18th century,is a combinations of music,dance,art and acrobatics.It is the most influential and representative of all operas in China.,Opening a door,walking at night,rowing a boat,eating,drinki

3、ng and the like are all demonstrated by the stylized movements of the actors and actresses.,Its repertoire includes historical plays,comedies,tragedies and farces,many historical events are adapted into Peiging Opera plays,which in the past were an important primer on history and ethical principles

4、for poorly educated fold.,Beijing opera was originally a local drama in Anhui Province.As the story goes,Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty fell interested in the local dramas during his inspection of the southern in disguise.To celebrate his eightieth birthday in 1790,he summoned opera troupes fr

5、om different localitis to perform for him in Beijing.,After the celebration,four famous troupes from Anhui Procince were asked to remain.Audience were particularly pleasted with their beautiful melodies,colorful costumes and interesting facial patterns.Gradually it replaced Kunqu which had been popu

6、lar in the palace and among the upper classes in Beijing.,Later,some troupes from Hubei Province came to Beijing and often performed together with the Anhui troupes.The two types of singing blended on the same stage and gradually gave birth to a new genre which came to be known as Beijing opera.,Par

7、t two:Roles in Beijing Opera,Sheng,Dan,Jing,Chou,laosheng,xiaosheng,wusheng,laodan,wudan,damadan,qingyi,huadan,Painted face male role,A male clown role,Laosheng:,The laosheng is a dignified older role.These characters have a gentle and cultivated disposition and wear sensible costumes.,Sheng,Sheng,X

8、iaosheng:,Young male characters are known as xiaosheng.These characters sing in a high,shrill voice with occasional breaks to represent the voice changing period of adolescence.,Sheng,Wusheng:,The wusheng is a martial character for roles involving combat.They are highly trained in acrobatics,and hav

9、e a natural voice when singing.,Dan,Wudan,o,Laodan,Daomadan,Qingyi,Huadan,The Dan refers to any female role in Beijing opera.Dan roles were originally divided into five subtypes.Old women were played by laodan,martial women were wudan,young female warriors were daomadan,virtuous and elite women were

10、 qingyi,and vivacious and unmarried women were huadan.,Jing,The Jing is a painted face male role.Depending on the repertoire of the particular troupe,he will play either primary or secondary roles.This type of role will entail a forceful character,so a Jing must have a strong voice and be able to ex

11、aggerate gestures.,chou,The Chou is a male clown role.The Chou usually plays secondary roles in a troupe.Indeed,most studies of Beijing opera classify the Chou as a minor role.Chou roles can be divided into Wen Chou,civilian roles such as merchants and jailers,and Wu Chou,minor military roles.,Part

12、three:The Facial Patterns and Costumes Of Beijing Opera,red signifies honesty,probity,courage and bravery.,urple does the same but to a less degree,black indicates impartiality,fortitude,and sometimes arrogance.,blue stands for savageness and fierceness,yet sometimes arrogance,yellow symbolizes the

13、same negative traits as blue,but milder,green is the color of unstable character.for example,the faces of devils are usually painted green,or,orange and gray are for old age.golden color is for gods,godesses and emperors.good-natured people are usually painted with relatively simple colors while the
