1、After Reading the Enormous Radio John Cheever s short story The Enormous Radio tell us a typical, ordinary , perfect American couple, the Westcotts. Through the enormous radio ,we know that they weren t so happy as they appeared to be. Irene is a housewife whose daily life was occupied with cleaning

2、 the house and taking care of her children. She had a large gap with his husband. They had little communication with each other. Her husband bought her a new enormous radio as gift which quickly abstracted her attention. It was bought to bring pleasure to them ,but it disrupt Irene s life after she

3、found it could listen to others conversations. On the one side, Irene became so addicted to eavesdropping on her neighbors situation. She learned many horrible things such as theft ,adultery and abuse were going around her. She realized that there were differences between the lives that they saw in

4、the elevators or at parties and those that played out behind closed doors. She was happy that she was not as badly as her neighbors. She asked his husband ,You love me ,dont you? And we are not hypocritical or worried about money or dishonest,are we? Irene convinced she is happy, and she refused to

5、see that she was as hypocritical as her neighbors was. In a word, Through this way she hoped to blind her from her own problems and she could feel better about herself. So I think that is why Irene accepted the enormous ugly radio in her carefully decorating living room. Gradually, Irene found that

6、she cant stay away from the radio. she listened to the radio all day. But she hides her new interest from the maid. Like the alcoholic hiding his drink. She afraid the maid to know her terrible interest. On the other side , she became apprehensive. She worried that her neighbors may be able to hear

7、what she and Jim talk about their apartment. It leaded Jim breakdown. He expressed his own long-suppressed financial worries and finally broadcast Irene s secret sins. He is sick of her addiction to the radio and disgusted about her stealing jewelry and money from her sister and about the nonchalant

8、 manner in which she went to have an abortion. The story end with an early morning railroad disaster in Tokyo killed twenty-nine people. A fire in a Catholic hospital near Buffalo for the care of blind children was extinguished early this morning by nuns. The temperature is forty-five. The humidity

9、is eighty-nine. Irene s attempts to hide her problems fail.As far as I could view, the opening end tell us that everyday life continues and everyone has everyday problems that you cannot avoid them by blinding oneself. It only makes life harder if we do not solve our problems. So the Westcotts should fix the problems in their family life rather than worrying about outer appearance, especially since the lives of their neighbors were just as bad as their own.
