7、h Projects Agency-Energy(ARPA-E)Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability(Smart Grid)Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office of Science Environmental Management,The Janis Group,Inc.,8,DOE ARPA-E Initiative,DOE announced a$400 million ARPA-E Recovery Act initiativeThis is the first solicitati
8、on for ARPA-E and one of the most important DOE Recovery Act announcements to dateARPA-E is a new organization within DOE,created specifically to foster R&D of transformational energy-related technologies,The Janis Group,Inc.,9,DOE ARPA-E Initiative,According to DOE,“Transformational technologies ar
9、e by definition technologies that disrupt the status quo.”“They are not merely better than current technologies,they are significantly better.”“Often,a technology is considered transformational when it so outperforms current approaches that it causes an industry to shift its technology base to the n
10、ew technology.”,The Janis Group,Inc.,10,DOE ARPA-E Initiative,To accomplish these goals,DOE says that ARPA-E is willing to work with any R&D entity1 singly or in teams,that has a transformational technology idea and a credible plan to mature that technology beyond either phase of the“valley of death
11、.”,The Janis Group,Inc.,11,DOE ARPA-E Initiative,DOE defines the“valley of death”of a technology as occurring in two phases.“The first phase occurs at the point of determining whether a laboratory stage technology can ever become a real-world technology or it has some inherent unsuitability for real
12、-world applications.Once it has been determined through R&D that the apparent barriers can be overcome and how they may be overcome,then additional investment from many other sources causes a new field of technology options to open up.”,The Janis Group,Inc.,12,DOE ARPA-E Initiative,“The second phase
