3、aining novel based on the American civil war as background, tells us Scarlett OHaras life experience from 16 to 28. It was a sweeping, romantic story about the American civil war from the point of view of the confederacy. In particular, its the story of Scarlett, a headstrong southern belle who surv

4、ives the hardships of the war and afterwards manages to establish a successful business by capitalizing on the struggle to rebuild the south because of her rare courage. Throughout the book, she is motivated by her unfulfilled love for Ashley Wilkes, an honorable man who is happily married. After a

Her courage was reflected in her experience and her thoughts, others opinions about her and the comparison between her and other southern people.II. Scarletts courage1. Her experienceWe can see Scarletts courage directly from her exper

8、ience, which can be divided into several parts: before the war, during the war, during the time of rebuilding the post-war home and the period when she finally found her real but lost lover Rhett.1.1 Before the warBefore the war, Scarletts courage was mainly reflected through her confessing love to

9、Ashley. Scarlett was a pretty, warm, pure, and romantic girl who lived in a rich family. Though she has many defects generally owned by noble girls: pride, conceited, vanity, willful, she still own attracted face and clever brain, which made her so attractive. So there were always many young men aro

10、und her and made love to her except for Ashley who she had loved since the day when Ashley would marry his cousin Melanie. After hearing about this dreadful news and later knowing its true, scarlet also felt disappointed and had heartache at first, she still had hope. Especially when she and her fam

11、ily prayed as often after supper, a deep sense of quiet and peace fell upon Scarlett as it always did at this hour. Some of the disappointment of the day and the dread of the morrow departed from her, leaving a feeling of hope. Here, we can see her courage through her optimistic character. Soon, an

12、idea, shining, suddenly flashed like a comet through her brain. “Why, Ashley hasnt an idea that Im in love with him. But if he knew I did love him.” Her mind went swiftly back to those times when she had caught him looking at her in that strange manner. Then her volatile spirits shot up from deepest

13、 depression to excited happiness. And so she decided that she must think of some way to let him know. Finally she found a chance at a party in Twelve Oaks to confess her love to Ashley. She trembled at first and dared not say. A thousand incoherent thoughts shot through her mind, and she could not c

14、atch a single one to mould into a word. Then suddenly she found her tongue,“yesa secret. I love you.” For an instant there was a silence. Then the trembling fell away from her, as happiness and pride surged through her. For a girl in those times when girls should be so ladylike, its indeed not an ea

15、sy thing to confess love. Any other girl couldnt do this. Hart courage was reflected here vividly for she did this and thought “why hadnt she done this before? How much simper than all the ladylike maneuverings she had been taught.” While Ashley refused her though he actually loved her for he was af

16、raid to marry her. He thought she had all the passion for life that he have not and he just wanted peace. He was going to marry Melanie for they are alike. He thought “a marriage cant go on in any sort of peace unless the two people are alike.” After she was refused and knew all was seen by Rhett, s

17、he still sustained herself though she was going to faint. Maybe its because she was so vanity and eager to do well in everything that she didnt want let others know, but if not she was brave enough, or we say, she had enough courage, how could she sustain herself?1.2 During the warTo rebel, or maybe

18、 because of her self-esteem, she married to Melanies cousinCharles. Then the war started. Men went to the war and Chares died even never fight a real war because of illness, so just with 2 weeks Scarlett had become a wife, and within two months more she was a widow. Then, she had her babyWade. She f

19、elt so annoyed and gloomy, because she wanted to be carefree and young again. She wanted to be Scarlett OHara again. “Marriage was bad enough, but to be widowed, then life was over forever!” And her mind was always disabused by others. She felt more annoyed and gloomy. “How stupid people were when t

20、hey talked about what a comfort little Wade must be to her, now that Charles was gone! How stupid of them to say that now she had something to live for!” And Ashley, most of all Ashley! No one could take out of her heart the ache that throbbed whenever Ashleys name was mentioned. Facing all of these

21、, Scarlett still accepted it bravely. She decided to go to Atlanta. Though she did not especially want to go to Atlanta for the aunt Pity is silly and the very idea of living under the same roof with Ashleys wife was abhorrent, any change was welcome. She must restore. She had the courage to restore

22、.Then she went to Atlanta. At first, there was an exciting atmosphere about the place that uplifted her for the face of the rapidly growing city was animated with never-ceasing energy and bustle. She noticed with interest all the new buildings and the new faces. But later she became annoyed and gloo

23、my again because she couldnt wear beautiful clothes, couldnt go to parties, which she cared most, and her mind was still disabused. Once, she sobbed. She threw herself on the bed and was sobbing at the top of her voice, sobbing for her lost youth and the pleasure of youth that were denied. But soon

24、she knew that sobbing can no longer help her. She had the courage to relieve herself. And she had the courage to admit that sobbing was useless. Once the chance to change this came, she would not let it go. Then, a chance came, she pleaded to go to nurse wounded soldier. At a party of a sale of good

25、s for charity, Scarlett did the thing she loved but couldnt do for a long timedancing with the help of Rhett, though she dared not do at first. After long struggling, she finally obtains the courage to do it, caring not others opinion about her. Oh, I dont care! I dont care what they say. She whispe

26、red, as a sweet madness swept over her. She didnt care. She was going to dance again. She was going to lead the reel! In such a situation -she was a widow who is forbidden from being present at public place. Let not go to say dancing at public place. Doing this need enough courage. If she lacked cou

27、rage, she dared not do it.When the war was spread to Atlanta, Scarlett had to stay at Atlanta instead of escaping like others, because Melanie was going to give birth and couldnt be moved. On the road to look for Dr Meade, she saw hundreds of wounded men, lying in the pitiless sun and moaning. Every

28、where, swarms of flies hovered over the men, crawling and buzzing in their faces, everywhere was blood, dirty bandages groans, screamed curses of pain as stretcher-bearers lifted men. Any girl who saw this scene would faint, but Scarlett quieted herself. She knew if she didnt quiet herself, she woul

29、d certainly faint. She overcame it of her courage. In order to look for Dr Meade, she had to go through those wounded men. And if she did not step carefully, she would tread on some poor soldier. Anyone who lacks courage dare not go on walking. She also had the feeling of funk. She knew she would sc

30、ream and faint if she stepped on one of these men. But she still went on walking. She stepped over dead men, over men who lay dull-eyed with hands clutched to bellies where dried blood had glued torn uniforms to wounds, over men whose bears were stiff with blood and from whose broken jaws came sound

31、s: “water! Water!” As she walked, feverish hands plucked at her skirt and voices croaked: “ladywater! Please, lady, water!” Finally she found Dr Meade, but he couldnt go with her because there were so many wounded men. So she had to pick her way rapidly through the wounded and went back with the las

32、t comfort that her slave Prissy knew all about midwifery. But after arriving at the house, she had another shockPrissy knew nothing about midwifery. Such a girl like Scarlett who had never had to do a thing for herself before, suddenly faced such situation- Melanie was going to give birth, the docto

33、r wasnt coming, she and Prissy know nothing about midwifery and the Yankees were comingthe most serious. She felt completely alone and frightened. In this hour of greatest need, there was no one to help her. For a moment her mind refused to accept the truth, but soon she accepted it and decided to m

34、anage it by herself though she felt as though a yoke descended heavily upon her neck. In this novel, Scarletts courage was mainly reflected on the road of escaping back to Tara and after coming back to Tara facing such bad situation. The author gave detailed description of Scarlett struggling to acc

35、ept all the hard facts and to overcome those hardships, in which Scarletts courage was presented totally, vividly and incisively.Rhett helped Scarlett escape out of flames of war. And then he left her after he was sure that Scarlett was safe, for his patriotism broke out and he would go to join the

36、army. It was so good to have a man like Rhett beside her, for he was safe and comfortable. It seemed that he stood between her and unnamable terrors. But he had gone, leaving her alone in a night as black as blindness with the Yankee army between her and her home. Any other girls who are not as stro

37、ng as her couldnt endure this shock in such bad situation and may give up and wait death. While Scarlett didnt give up and overcame those unimaginable troubles the nightmare journey after Rhett went away: the endless night, the black road full of ruts and boulders along which they jolted, the deep g

38、ullies on either side into which the wagon slipped, the unwilling horse, unknown footsteps and so on. But she overcame them! That terrible night passed finally! Then after a very long hard journey, a girl like her-never been out in the sunshine without a hat or veils, never handed reins without glov

39、es to protect the white skin of her dimpled hands, arrived at home at last after plodding along at a snails pace through a deserted land with ill Melanie and her baby, her own child Wade and useless Prissy, exposing to the sum in a broken-down wagon with a broken-down horse, dirty, sweaty, hungry, h

40、elpless to do anything, and exposing to the death in the air-no cattle lowed, no birds song, no wind waved the tress, dead men and dead horse lying by the road, swollen, covered with flies, but nothing alive.If we say Scarlett had the courage on the road back to Tara because of her belief to homeshe

41、 thought home was safe and she could lay down her burdens there, the situation she faced after coming back home gave a big shock to her, or to her courage. She originally thought that once she went into their house, she could reach the kind arms of Tara and Ellen, see her mothers kind, tender face,

42、feel once more the soft capable hands that drove out fear, clutch mothers skirts and bury her face in them and lay down her burdens, far too heavy for her young shouldersthe dying woman, the fading baby, her own hungry little boy, the frighten negro, all looking to her for strength, for guidance. Bu

43、t when she arrived at home, the facts she faced were that her mother had died, her father had lost his mind, all food had been robbed by the Yankees and all family members were depending on her. Her hope to come home to lay down her loads had been broken. There were just more loads for her to carry.

44、 But she endured it and became stronger. She told herself that her shoulder were strong enough to bear anything then. She had the courage to stand anything, even when she heard the news of her mothers death. She didnt faint though weariness and hunger had made her knees tremble at that time. Moreove

45、r, she even could manage to ask the situation of home then and later manage to make plans and give orders. Then the scene of her going out to search foods made us more feel her courage. Scarlett- a girl who had never raised her hand even to pick up her discarded stockings from the floor, walked arou

46、nd for food and picked up cabbages then with a fired and faint body. After a long time, she lay weakly on her face the earth as soft and comfortable as a feather pillow. She was too sick and too weak to move, and no one in the world knew or cared. And she was still too weak to fight off memories and

47、 worries. She felt that she had no strength to say “I will think of all this later. Yes, later when I can stand it.” She felt she couldnt stand it then. But at last she arouse! Seeing again the black ruins of Twelve oaks, her head raised high and her potential tenderness had gone out of her face for

48、ever. She knew that the old days were gone, never to return. As Scarlett settled the heavy basket across her arm, she had settled her own mind and her own life. She said to herself, “Im going go live through this and when its over, Im never going to be hungry again.” It seems that it can only be felt. Her courage can be strongly felt through this. There was no going back and she going forward!When a Yankee entered, her first terrified impulse was to hide in the closet, crawl under the bed, fly down the back stairs and run screaming to the s
