5、人Abstract: The Merchant of Venice is an outstanding play in the 16th century, and it is the most satirical one in all Shakespeares comedies. The play includes two parallel plots: the main plot is the conflict between the merchant of Venice Antonio and the Jewish money-lender Shylock, who have a suit
6、 about a pound of flesh; the sub-plot is a romantic story, wealthy Portria who follows her fathers will, chooses her husband by means of three caskets. In addition, it inserts the story that with a sum of money Shylocks daughter Jessica elopes with Christian Lorenzo. The main conflict is between the
7、 symbol of justice, friendship, love and humanity and the symbol of hatred, revenge, greed and cruelty. Shylock-a Jewish money-lender, who stands opposite to the “love and friendships”, so the contradiction between Antonio and Bassanio becomes the main clue of the whole plays conflict, the struggle

In the 16th century, the epoch of Renaissance, many works expressed the aggravation of the contradiction between the wealth of the ruling class and the poverty of the people, and also the religious contradictions.
