1、Contrast between drama and novelNovel, by definition, is a fictitious prose narrative of book length, representing characters relationship, destiny, behavior, thought and emotions through plot and environment. We usually read novel instead of drama. Drama is a story people act out on a stage before

2、spectators which means that play is “not really a piece of literature for reading”.Considering this fundamental contrast, I want to propose two different senses. These two literary genres render me.As is universally acknowledged, what distinguishes drama most from novel is the issue of narration. It

3、 is through the narrators point of view that novelists tell their stories, describe their characters and discuss their ideas. In contrast, playwrights rely on their characters to tell a story through concrete and tangible dialogue and action.In light of this special means of representation in drama,

4、 the ability to be acted is of chief importance to the language in drama. By transforming some separate fleeting events into individual actions, which could stimulate vision sense and imagination of the audience, drama turns the past into the present. Drama readers can visualize the play as a theatr

5、e performance, seeing it enacted in their minds eye as if on a real stage by real actions taking, walking and gesticulating. Meanwhile, spectacle, inclusive of scenery, lighting, costume, make-up and the blocking of actors, also attributes to the visual effect. It relates characters to the social en

6、vironment they live in. in this way, we can easily involve ourselves with the fantasy picture the playwright painted for us. I want to call this kind of effect the sense of vision.As opposed to the sense of vision presented by drama, novel may provide us a strong sense of reminiscence. In a novel, t

7、he delineation of “real life” like appearance, speech, action and the representation of psychology namely feelings, illusions, dream activities and even the subconscious do alternately. Moreover, voice-over, comments and expressions of feelings are prevailing in novels. Therefore, novel readers make

8、 full use of their imagination, perception and experience to interpret a novel. Our interpretation might go far from the concrete details the novelist offers us. So its possible to feel confused between a great excitement and a strong restlessness which is the characters are experiencing as well. Af

9、ter all is over, we may sense a kind of abstract reminiscence. We dont have a specific idea of the environment in the story or the appearance of the characters, but we feel as if we have gone through all those experiences together with them the sense of reminiscence.To this extent, novel is past perfect tense while drama is present continuous tense.
