His masterpieces The Garden and To His Coy Mistress made him lay in a very solid position
2、in the history of poetry. It is known to all that Marvells poems are the “most major minor verse in English” nowadays. As an amateur, he wrote nearly one hundred poems on different themes including pastoral, love and religious, but most of the poems except for his masterpieces are often ignored by l
3、ater generations. The research about him is just at the beginning stage. Up to now, most of his works has not been translated into Chinese, even not been touched by other scholars, which adds a big challenge to this paper. At the same time, this situation made the research more meaningful and valuab
4、le.After reading his poems, I found the themes reflected in his poems is quite complex. His outlook about life, love and time is always full of conflict. This thesis will try to study systematically the themes in Marvells poems applying the Tension theory of New Critics to get a conclusion that the
5、thematic tension about life, love and time made his poems more profound and meaningful. The social background and his life experience will also be explored to prove that the tension in his themes is just a natural overflow of the confusing and pains in his inner mind and a reflection of the conflict
6、s existing in every peoples mind in that age.Key words: Andrew Marvell Theme Tension 摘 要安德鲁马维尔是十七世纪英国玄学派诗人之一。他的经典之作“花园”和“致他羞涩的情人”奠定了他在诗歌历史上的坚固地位。我们通常评论他的诗歌为“最主要的次要诗歌”。做为一个业余诗人，他写出了一百多首脍炙人口的诗歌，其主题包括了田园、爱情和宗教，但是除了他的代表作外，他的其他诗歌很少受到后来人的关注。迄今为止，他的大部分作品还没用被翻译成汉语，甚至没用被学者们提及过。对他的研究还处在很初级的阶段，这样的一个事实给本篇论文增加了很
