1、How to achieve a work balance between work and lifeCorporate life asks ever more of us, whether its working through lunch or staying late, so how can we find time to call your own Nine to Five may have been a hit for Dolly Parton, but, for most of us, its no longer true of working life. Longer hours

2、 and e-mail make it hard to switch off and balancing the demands on your time is a challenge, particularly if you have family commitments. But having a meaningful job doesnt have to mean sacrificing your personal life. Weigh up what the experts have to say about finding that mythical equilibrium. 1.

3、 Join the revolution. “Flexible working is on the rise,” says Stephen Overell, a researcher at the Work Foundation, a charity. “Employers will go to surprising lengths to accommodate you.” So if starting an hour later or working from home one day a week would improve things, ask for it. “Sell the ar

4、rangement to your employer as a business case,” says Steve Williams, head of equality at Acas, the employment relations service. Legally, managers are obliged to consider your request, although they dont have to agree to it. 2. Manage your time. Self-discipline is your saviour. “You might work 11 ho

5、urs a day but if four are spent chatting or being interrupted its not productive,” says Peter Flade, a managing partner at Gallup, a consultancy. He also advises setting aside sacrosanct time outside the office where work is not allowed to interfere. 3. Say “no” positively. “If you take on too much,

6、 then you cant deliver on it well, it eats away at you and you let people down,” Flade says. “Saying no is better for your clients, colleagues, and family.” Overell agrees. “Everyone has the urge to please, especially younger workers. But you get more respect by saying no than saying yes.” 4. Focus

7、on outcomes. Measure your performance by what you achieve dont stay late for the sake of it. “It could be that you can do your work in 35 hours and your colleague takes 50, ” says Flade. “Its the quality of the work that counts.” Overell: “Graduates are often pushed very hard and its intoxicating to

8、 be in that elite group. But retain a sense of perspective.” 5. Sharpen your skills. “Take advantage of every training opportunity youll improve your skills and find ways to become more efficient,” Williams says. 6. Look after yourself. Sleep and diet are often the first casualties when work becomes

9、 too much. “Consistently working long hours is not good for you,” Overell says. “Stress can lead to mental health problems and heart disease.” 7. Take time out. “Some people go to the gym at lunchtime, others go out for a walk,” Williams says. “A break will make you more productive and prevent that

10、3 oclock output slump.” 8. Dont neglect your friends. Working relationships can lead to lasting friendships, but more often than not they fade when people move on. “Its very easy to let workmates become proxy for friends and family,” Overell says. “But its a superficial network and needs to be check

11、ed.” 9. Talk to someone. If youre feeling stressed, say something early, Williams advises. “Dont wait until youre cracking up and your work is hopelessly behind.” Usually your line manager is the best person to approach, he says. 10. Work is not the enemy. “Work can be a huge source of wellbeing,” s

12、ays Flade, who puts in 60-hour weeks but refuses to own a BlackBerry and never works at weekends. “Theres a huge difference between being busy and being stressed,” Williams says. “Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect ali

19、even be good for you. But, too many stressful situations can prevent you from reaching your full potential. There is no magic pill to eliminate stress. It will take a determined effort on your part to control your lifestyle and to prevent stress overload. But, you must be willing to put in the time

How To Achieve Life Balance: 1. Know Yourself. means knowing what you really value, knowing wha

21、t is really important to you. The challenge here is to organize your life to assure that everything that you are doing is consistent with your true values. It is critical for you to organize your life around yourself, rather than to organize yourself around the demands of your outside world. 2. Time

22、 Management. after you have determined your values and the goals that are congruent with those values, you must set your priorities. Make a list of all the tasks that you can possibly do and then select from that list the things that are most important to you. You must also be able to decide which t

23、asks you are going to stop doing so that you will have enough time to start doing the more important tasks. Manage your time wisely. 3. Use Your Time Wisely. Most people are time wasters. They waste their own time, and they waste your time as well. To be successful and happy, you must discipline you

24、rself to work all the time you work. If you are at the work place, Im sure you have experienced a co-worker who will come by and want to chat. you simply smile at them and say, “Could we talk about this later?” Tell them that you have to get back to work. Dont allow yourself to waste your valuable t

25、ime or you will be rushing in order to complete the necessary tasks and this will just add stress to the work day. Learn the value of saying “No” 4. Have a Plan. By having a plan, you can follow your progress and decide whether you are achieving your desired goals. Without a plan, you will just end

26、up busy and exhausted. Some things that you may want to consider are the following: create deadlines for projects, focus on tasks that follow your plan and help you get closer to your ultimate goal. 5. Build solid relationships. Have you created business and personal relationships? Your interaction

27、with family and friends will replenish your personal happiness and energy. Protect these relationships, as they are very valuable and irreplaceable assets. 6. Rest and Relaxation. It is important that you get enough rest and relaxation to give your body time to repair itself and give your mind time

28、to re-focus and unwind. This is a part of achieving life balance. This is your opportunity to have some quality “Me Time” . Take time out of your day and do something for YOU! It could be a favorite hobby, reading a good book, listening to music, etc. 7. Get Enough Sleep. We all know that if we dont

29、 get enough sleep, we get grouchy and irritable and perhaps dont perform as well the next day. But, a good nights sleep allows our body time to repair and time to maintain our muscles and vital organs. Plus,chemicals vital to the immune system are released when we sleep, so sleep is important for ma

30、intaining our immune systems and general health. It also gives our brain a break and allows it to re-focus itself. 8. Regular Exercise Routine. Exercising is a must for busy executives and entrepreneurs. Repetitive exercises tend to be the best to help de-stress, such as using a treadmill or eliptic

31、al machine. Exercise tires your body giving it the signal to go to sleep to repair itself. But dont exercise immediately before going to bed as your metabolism will still be pumping. Leave at least 2 hours between exercise and bedtime. There are many other relaxation techniques such as meditation, v

32、isualisation, progressive muscle relaxation and self-hypnosis that can help get you off to sleep if the above techniques dont work. 9. Reward Yourself. After challenging yourself to focus on your work-life balance, dont forget to reward yourself for making an effort to change. Give yourself a treat

33、and you will feel proud every time you look over at your reward and be motivated to keep your new healthy habits. 10. Revisit Your Plan On A Regular Basis. Make sure to check your plan often to make sure you are working smart and on the right path. Plans are a guide and are not carved in stone. What works for you today may not work for you next year. Change offers amazing opportunities to grow and you must be ready for the challenge. Being able to achieve life/work balance will help you get more out of life. Take a pro-active approach to making life choices that you can be proud of.
