Meanwhile, the author expresses how beautif

2、ul humanity is through what happened among the girl, Mr. Easton and the marshal. From the text, we can know that the real marshal helped Mr. Easton to disguise as a marshal in front of a pretty, elegant girl-an old friend of Mr. Easton. First, the story took place in a coach, the girl and Mr. Easton

3、 encountered and had a conversation. The girl was surprised and frightened when she saw the manacles. Then the other man with Mr. Easton broke into their conversation and said he was a criminal travelled under Mr. Eastons escort. And the girl immediately became quite appreciated Mr. Easton as she th

4、ought he was a marshal. Here the description of the girl, pretty, elegant, and her reaction to the manacles indicate the reason why the real marshal helped Mr. Easton. Possibly the marshal wanted to protect Mr. Eastons dignity. The text tells us what happened while the context helps us determine mea

5、ning of an article. We may connect the authors personal experience with some plot in the text so as to better understand the story. The author- O. Henry had the experience of being put in jail for embezzling funds of a bank, and in the story the main character Easton is a prisoner who is going to be

6、 put in prison for counterfeiting. Besides, O. Henry had lived in the West for sometime. And this whole story happened in the West. Meanwhile, the West is frequently mentioned in the conversation between Easton and Fairchild. Next comes to the subtext. We may get some information beyond the words. I

7、t seems O. Henry shows pity to the criminal, maybe he himself once suffered similar experience. And as he had lived the life in the West, he shows his preference for the West through the girls description, such as I love the West and “I could live and be happy in the West”. Moreover, if we read care

8、fully we can find some more words between the lines. At the first part of the story, it is a bit inconceivable for a person to admit he is a prisoner in front of a stranger. It is more reasonable that the marshal tried to help the young man to disguise his plight. And at the end of the story, one of

9、 the passengers said no officer will handcuff a prisoner to his right hand which means the prisoner, in fact, is the real marshal. In conclusion, text, context and subtext cannot be separated with each other and they work together to support the thesis. Text tells what happened, context builds up a

10、connection through the whole text, helping readers better understand and these two works together and we can get the subtextthe authors implication and real intention. Here, what happened among the girl, Mr. Easton and the marshal indicates that people should respect others even they are in a low status and thats the beauty of humanity.
