、What I Have Learnt from the English Writing ClassWhat I Have Learnt from the English Writing Class? 0905103-20李莉 After eight weeks English writing classes, I found that what I ever wrote was so terrible except the clean script. I dont think eight weeks are enough for us to learn writing well, all we

、 have to do is to practice more after class, which includes remembering some graceful words, frequently-used phrases and some writing skills. At first, Id like to list some problems in my writing. To tell the truth, I pay much attention to my grammar and try not to make any simple mistakes but I ign

Whats more, I usually cant think of so many grounds of arguments, thus, my writings are so pale and powerless. I ever thought that if I can write withou

、t any grammar mistakes, no matter how ordinary the words and phrases are, I still can get a considerable mark after all. However, I am wrong, as an English major student, I should not stay at the horizon, I must learn to improve myself for the TEM8 and my future. Through the English writing classes,

、 I summarize several points for me to make progress. I hope that I could learn them carefully and move foreward step by step. Firstly, enlarge my quantity of words and phrases. Dont use the simple words, such as “think”, I can change it into “reckon”, “assume”, “consider” and so on. If so, I bet tha

、t I can get a little mark no matter in the readers mind or in the paper marks. Its wise to look up all the words I need before I write so it wont interrupt my fluency of writing. Needless to say, the words must be written correctly. Secondly, learn to vary the styles of the sentences. The sentence “

、S+V+O” is such a common sentence that cant attract ones eyes. Trying to make a change will be better. For example, “I like play basketball” is simple enough, and then change a way, will the two “I am a person who like play basketball” and “what I like is to play basketball” lighten the lights? Never

、theless, keep “the sentences shouldnt be too long” in mind, or the reader may feel tired to read them. Thirdly, the topic should be creative. In modern society, almost everything needs creativity. If I choose the average topic, I must say the reader will not have the interest to read my composition

、after having read plenty of them. Take the example our teacher ever said, when we asked to write the most important invention in our life, most of us may quickly bring the computer, light, book etc. out, these are really some good topics, but why not think another to replace them by glasses or other

、s? Too many same topics only make the readers consider youre a person without creativity. Fourthly, make an outline before writing. Formerly, I often tend to write composition directly in order to save time. However, my thought is not clear. When thinking of some arguments about the topic, I will wr

、ite it on the paper. Once getting them together, I notice that the arguments are not relational. While on the opposite, I can put my thoughts in the outline firstly, then to choose the proper ones. A plan will help me to keep a clear focus and avoid repetition. Just write down the points I want to m

、ake and order them into logical paragraphs. Fifthly, check the composition after finishing it. Nobody can do everything best one time. Check carefully and correct then. Dont slight this process which will reflect ones quality. Altogether, all that I said above can be summed up below: 1. Before we st

、art writing, we should ask ourselves Why are we writing? firstly. By thinking about the purpose of our compositions, we can choose the most appropriate vocabulary. Then “Who is we writing to? Who is our reader, and what is his/her level of English?” Choose our language carefully and avoid words and

、expressions that are too simple or complicated. And prepare for writing by making an outline, and looking up all the words we need before we start writing. 2. During the writing, we should order our outlines and make more than 2 arguments to support our ideas. Of course, every argument needs some ex

、amples or evidences,so the evidences should be cogent and creative. People often regard the good composition as the hamburger. The beginning and the conclusion are not too “thick” but necessary, while the body is well-rounded and appeals to ones appetite. 3. After completing the composition, it is e

、ssential for us to review once again. Some small mistakes may be neglected before, even the punctuation mark should be check carefully. Besides, we should make sure the script is clean and tidy, quite a few students lose marks here. At our ordinary times, we should work more hard. “Rome wasnt built

、in a day”, only through our hardworking can we make progress in the future. Besides remembering words and phrases, we should finish them in a limited time when we write compositions, and develop our good habits from now on. In conclusion, we can do a lot of things better with the ability of writing

、well. When we work after graduating, it is hard to avoid writing resumes, letters, E-mails, reports and so on in both Chinese and English. So, it is so significant to learn it well at school. Through the 8-week writing classes, I have learnt some writing skills and methods. As long as I use them more often, I must say it will do a lot of good to my future. It is not a difficulty but an opportunity for me. As the saying goes, “where there is a will, there is a way”, I also believe I can make a difference.
