2、cial, economic, political, cultural, scientific and technological changes in human society. 3. Lexicology is a branch of linguistics concerned with the study of the vocabulary of a given language. It deals with words, their origin, development, structure, formation, meaning and usage. 4.the elevatio

3、n of meaning refers to the process by which words rise from humble beginnings to positions of importance. 5.Acronymswords formed from the initial letters of words and pronounced as words. They differ from initialisms in that they are pronounced as words rather than as sequences of letters. 6.Hyponym

Polysemy-The same word may have two or more different meanings. This is known as

Idiom-Strictly speaking, idioms are expressions that are not readily understandable from their literal meanings of individual elements. For example, fly off the handle (become excessiv

17、ely angry) and put up with (tolerate). In a broad sense, idioms may include colloquialisms, catchphrases, slang expressions ,proverbs,etc. 25.
