Chapter One Human Life Like a Poem I think that, from a biological standpoint, human life almost reads like a poem. It has its own rhythm and beat, its internal cycles of growth and decay. No one can say that a life with childhood, manh

、ood and old age is not a beautiful arrangement; 人生有童年、少年和老年,谁也不能否认这是一种美好的安排, the day has its morning, noon and sunset, and the year has its seasons, and it is good 一天要有清晨、正午和日落,一年要有四季之分,如此才好。 that it is so. There is no good or bad in life, except what is good according to its own season.

And if we take this biological view of life and try to live according to the seasons, no one but a conceited fool or an impossible idealist can deny that human life can be lived like a poem. Lin Yutang 1.We Are on a Journey人在旅途

、By Henry Van Dyke Wherever you are, and whoever you maybe, there is one thing in which you and I are just alike at this moment, and in all the moments of our existence. We are not at rest; we are on a journey, our life is a movement, a tendency, a steady, ceaseless progress towards an unseen goal. W

、e are gaining something, or losing something, everyday. Even when our position and our character seem to remain precisely the same, they are changing. For the mere advance of time is a change. It is not the same thing to have a bare field in January and in July, the season makes the difference. The

、limitations that are childlike in the child are childish in the man. Everything that we do is a step i

、n one direction or another, even the failure to do something is in itself a deed. It sets us forward or backward. The action of the negative pole of a magnetic needle is just as real as the action of the positive pole. To decline is to accept the other alternative.

Are you nearer to your port today than you were yesterday? Yes, - you must be a little nearer to some port or other; for since your ship was first lunched upon the sea of life, you have never been still for a single moment; the sea is too deep, you could

、not find an anchorage if you would. There can be no pause until you come into port. By Ernest Hemingway In a calm sea every man is a pilot. But all s

、unshine without shade, all pleasure without pain, is not life at all. Take the lot of the happiest - it is a tangled yarn. Bereavements and blessings, one following another, make us sad and blessed by turns. Even death itself makes life more loving. Men come closest to their true selves in the sober

、 moments of life, under the shadows of sorrow and loss. In the affairs of life or of business, it is not intellect that tells so much as character, not brains so much as

、heart, not genius so much as self-control, patience, and discipline, regulated by judgment. I have always believed that the man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without. In an age of extravagance a

、nd waste, I wish I could show to the world how few the real wants of humanity are. To regret ones errors to the point of not repeating them is true repentance. There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nob

、ility is in being superior to your previous self. 3. The World as I See It我的世界观 By Albert Einstein How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it.

、 But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other peoplefirst of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every

、 day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving. I am strongly drawn to a frugal life and am often oppressively aware that I am engross

、ing an undue amount of the labor of my fellowmen. I regard class distinctions as unjustified and, in the last resort, based on force. I also believe that a simple and unassuming life is good for everybody, physically and mentally.

I do not at all belie

、ve in human freedom in the philosophical sense. Everybody acts not only under external compulsion but also in accordance with inner necessity. Schopenhauers saying, “A man can do what he wants, but not want what he wants,” has been a very real inspiration to me since my youth; it has been a continua

、l consolation in the face of lifes hardships, my own and others, and an unfailing wellspring of tolerance. This realization mercifully mitigates the easily paralyzing sense of responsibility and prevents us from taking ourselves and other people all too seriously; it is conducive to a view of life w

、hich, in particular, gives humor its due. To inquire after the meaning or object of ones own existence

、or that of all creatures has always seemed to me absurd from an objective point of view. And yet everybody has certain ideals which determine the direction of his endeavors and his judgments. In this sense I have never looked upon ease and happiness as ends in themselvesthis ethical basis I call the

、 ideal of a pigsty. The ideals which have lighted my way and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. Without the sense of kinship with men of like mind, without the occupation with the objective world, the eternally unattainable in th

、e field of art and scientific endeavors, life would have seemed to me empty. The trite objects of human effortspossessions, outward success, luxuryhave always seemed to me contemptible.

4. Love Your Life热爱生活 By Henry David Thoreau However mean your life is, meet it and live it 不论你的生活如何卑微,你都得面对与度过 do not shun it and call it hard names 不

、要逃避,更不要抱怨 it is not so bad as you are 生活不像你认为的那般坏 It looks poorest when you are richest The fault finder will find faults in paradise Love your life, poor as it is You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poor-hous

The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich mans abode The snow melts before its door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there

And have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace. The towns poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any. Maybe they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are

、 above being supported by the town. By Bertrand Russell If you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy, you will see that they all have certain things in common. The most important of these things is an activity which at most gra

、dually builds up something that you are glad to see coming into existence. Women who take an instinctive pleasure in their children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family. Artists and authors and men of science get happiness in this way if their own work seems good to them. Bu

、t there are many humbler forms of the same kind of pleasure. Many men who spend their working life in the city devote their weekends to voluntary and unremunerated toil in their gardens, and when the spring comes, they experience all the joys of having created beauty.

The whole subject of happiness has, in my opinion, been treated too solemnly. It had been thought that

、 man cannot be happy without a theory of life or a religion. Perhaps those who have been rendered unhappy by a bad theory may need a better theory to help them to recovery, just as you may need a tonic when you have been ill. But when things are normal a man should be healthy without a tonic and hap

、py without a theory. It is the simple things that really matter. If a man delights in his wife and children, has success in work, and finds pleasure in the alternation of day and night, spring and autumn, he will be happy whatever his philosophy may be. If, on the other hand, he finds his wife fatef

、ul, his childrens noise unendurable, and the office a nightmare; if in the daytime he longs for night, and at night sighs for the light of day, then what he needs is not a new philosophy but a new regimen-a different diet, or more exercise, or what not.

Man is an animal, and hi

、s happiness depends on his physiology more than he likes to think. This is a humble conclusion, but I cannot make myself disbelieve it. Unhappy businessmen, I am convinced, would increase their happiness more by walking six miles every day than by any conceivable change of philosophy.

6. Work, Labor, and Play By Wystan Hugh Auden So far as I know, Miss Hannah Arendt was the first person to define the essential difference between work and labor. To be happy, a man must feel, firstly, free and, s

、econdly, important. He cannot be really happy if he is compelled by society to do what he does not enjoy doing, or if what he enjoys doing is ignored by society as of no value or importance. In a society where slavery in the strict sense has been abolished, the sign that what a man does is of social

、 value is that he is paid money to do it, but a laborer today can rightly be called a wage slave. A man is a laborer if the job society offers him is of no interest to himself but he is compelled to take it by the necessity of earning a living and supporting his family.

The antithesis to labor is play. When we play a game, we enjoy what we are doing, otherwise we should not play

、it, but it is a purely private activity; society could not care less whether we play it or not. Between labor and play stands work. A man is a worker if he is personally interested in the job which society pays him to do; what from the point of

、view of society is necessary labor is from his own point of view voluntary play. Whether a job is to be classified as labor or work depends, not on the job itself, but on the tastes of the individual who undertakes it. The difference does not,for example, coincide with the difference between a manua

、l and a mental job; a gardener or a cobbler may be a worker, a bank clerk a laborer. Which a man is can be seen from his attitude toward leisure. To a worker, leisure means simply the hours he needs to relax and rest in order to work efficiently. He is therefore more likely to take too little leisur

、e than too much; workers die of coronaries and forget their wives birthdays. To the laborer, on the other hand, leisure means freedom from compulsion, so that it is natural for him to imagine that the fewer hours he has to spend laboring, and the more hours he is free to play, the better.
