5、at Harvard from 1906 to 1909earning his bachelors degree after three years,instead ofthe usual fourAfter working as a philosophy assistant at Harvard from1909 to 1910.Eliot moved to Paris,where from 1910 to1911,he studied philosophy at the SorbonneFrom 1911 to 1914,he was back at Harvard studying In
6、dianphilosophy and Sanskrit.By 1916,he had completed a doctoral dissertationHarvard on Knowledge and Experience in the Philosophy orE H.Bradley but he failed to return for the viva voce exam,Eliot and Vivienne Haigh-Wood,a Cambridge governesswere married on June 26.1915The marriage was markedly unha
7、ppy,in part because ofViviennes health issuesBy 1932,Eliot had been contemplating a separation fromhis wife for some time.When Harvard offered him theCharles Eliot Norton professorship for the 1932-1933academic year,he accepted and left Vivienne in EnglandUpon his return,he arranged for a formal sep
8、aration fromherVivienne was committed to a mental hospital in 1938and remained there until she died.Although Eliot was stilllegally her husband,he nevervisited her,On January 10,1957,Eliot at the age of 68 married EsmeValerie Fletcher,who was 32.They kept.theirweddingsecret.And they had a happy life
