2、conceivedasarchitecturewithoutroofs:aspacetobothappreciatefromtheupperlevelsofthehouse,aswellasanintimatesetofrestfulcourtyardstobeenjoyedfromwithin.Thedesignpayscarefulattentiontothesensoryexperienceofmaterialsandplanting,whichcontributetotherichnessandbeautyofthegarden. 3、skoAssociatesThisurbangardeninthePacificHeightsdistrictofSanFranciscosurroundsasingle-familyhome.Thehousewasdesignedin1990bythenotedBayAreaarchitecturalfirmEHDDunderthetutelageofthelateJoeEsherick.Whenviewedfromthehomestwobalconiesoverlookingthesite,thegardenisagraphiccompositionofspace,materialsand
4、planting.FromthisperspectivethedistantSanFranciscoBayandAlcatrazIslandslipintotheviewofthecityspreadoutbelowtheproperty.Thegardenisdesignedtocarrythesenseofthecitysurbanfabricintothesite.Fromwithin,thegardenisintimatelyexperiencedasasequenceofoutdoorrooms,theirspacesanddesignfeaturessequentiallyconc
5、ealedandrevealedasonepassesthrougheachthresholdinthecomposition.Thegardenisdividedintoaseriesofthreeenclosedgardenrooms,eachrigorouslydefinedbyarchitecturaland/orplantededges.Thevarietyofedgetreatmentstranslucentglass,hand-troweledplaster,acurvedbronzewall,andplantingexploretherelationshipbetweenvie
6、werandtheadjacentoff-siteconditions.ThewallsbetweenroomsarecomposedofclippedPrunuscarolinianahedges,fitwithinthestructureofsteelframes.Thresholdsbetweenthespacescreateasenseofmysteryanddiscoveryasonemovesthroughthegarden.Eachroomisdistinctinformandquality.Thefirstroom,inneedoflightandprivacy,isdefin
7、edbytranslucentglassthatemitslightandrevealssubtleformsfrombeyondthegardensedge.ThisedgeisreinforcedwithbillowingPelargoniumtomentosumandSalviacacaliifoliatobringasenseofnatureandfragranceintotheotherwiseconstructedspace.Thesculpturalformsofmulti-branchedOsmanthusfragransagainstacleanplasterwallterm
8、inatetheviewendofthisspace.Thesecondroomisdominatedbythemostdramaticelementofthegarden,alargecurvingwallmadeofbronze.Fromaslotinthewall,watercascadesintoabasincutintothepavingbeneath.Placedagainstanadjacentbuildingwall,thewaterfeaturecreatesasensualedgetothequiet,introspectivespace.Inthethirdroom,th
9、evisitorgetsasurprisevistaofthecity,thebay,andtheTrans-AmericaBuildingthroughanopenwindowlikepanelinatranslucentwall.ThewallsreededglasspanelslayeredovertheneighborsBeaux-Artsbalustradeacknowledgesthepasticheofthecity,andisareferencetochangingstylesofarchitectureovertime.Alemontree,espalieredagainst
10、aplasterwall,alignswiththegardensaxialview.Thegardenemployslargeswathsofcontrastingmaterialstocreateaboldgraphiccomposition:lightlimestonepavingwhichglowsintheSanFranciscofogispunctuatedwithbandsofwoolythyme;darkgranitestoneisetchedwithpallidspiralstoevokeamosaic.Theplantingpaletteisrestrained;shade
11、sofgreenandgreywithwhiteflowersgiveprecedencetoformovercolor.Boldtexturedfoliagecontrastsdramaticallywiththematerialityofthespace.Thecombinationofmaterialselectionandstructuralcompositionrespondtothesimple,distilledformsofthehouse.Thegardenbecomesaliteralextensionofthehouseforeverydaylivingwhilestillrelatingtoitsadjacenturbanform.VisittheLutskoAssociateswebsitehere.PhotographybyMarionBrenner
