With some universities in China already having the necessary hardware conditions for carrying out network-based projects (Go & Xu,1999) it is time for EFL teachers in China to e

21、xplore and utilize the Internet to improve the traditional EFL writing instruction, which, as Shih (1999) stated,” focuses on producing correct language rather than on selecting,organizing,and presenting ideas for effective communication to a reader.” (20). However, as with other new educational tec

22、hnology, it is not so much the tool that improves teaching and learning, but how the instructor integrates that tool into the curriculum and into the educational setting (Figaro & Montell,1999). To integrate technology into the curriculum and the educational setting successfully, there is a need for

23、 an explicit definition of the pedagogical role of the technology (Figaro & Montell, 1999).This article reviews studies on network-based EFL/ESL writing instructions, and investigates the pedagogical role of computer networks in EFL/ESL writing instruction in the following aspects: (1) Pedagogical b

24、enefits of network-based EFL/ESL writing instruction; and (2) Limitations of network-based EFL/ESL writing instruction.The Internet is a vast network linking computers all over the world.
