2、idtolateeighteenthcentury.However,somecriticsareskepticalregardingthelegitimacyandaccuracyofthememoir.TheyclaimthattheChevalierdistortedorinventedmanyeventsinthememoirtogivehislifetheappearanceofglamourtomakeitseemmoreexcitingthanitreallywas.Forexample,inhismemoirtheChevalierwritesthatwhilelivinginS

3、witzerland,hewasverywealthy.Itiscertainthathespentagreatdealofmoneythereonpartiesandgambling;however,evidencehasrecentlybeenuncoveredsuggestingthattheChevalierborrowedlargesumsofmoneyfromaSwissmerchant.CriticsthusarguethatiftheChevalierhadindeedbeenasrichashewritesinhismemoir,hewouldnothaveneededtob

4、orrowmoney.CriticsarealsoskepticalaboutexaggerationsandfalsificationsintheconversationsthattheChevalierrecordsbetweenhimselfandthefamouswriterVoltaire.ItisahistoricalcertaintythattheChevalierandVoltairemetandconversed.However,criticsassertthatthememoircannotpossiblycapturetheseconversationswithtotal

5、accurately,giventhatitwaswrittenmanyyearsaftertheoriginalconversationsoccurred.Criticspointoutthatitisatbestunlikelyandatworstimpossibletorememberexactphrasesfromconversationsheldmanyyearsearlier.CriticshavealsocalledintoquestionthememoirsaccountoftheChevaliersescapefromanotoriouslyfamousprisoninVen
