11、系，而是表达另外的含义,白开水-plain boiled water白菜-Chinese cabbage白字-wrongly written or mispronounced character白搭-no use白费事-all in vain白面-flour,以汉语的红字为例,中国人将结婚称为红喜事,将丧事称作白事。所以汉语中有“红白喜事”的说法,多数西方人对此难以理解。如不熟悉汉民族这一风俗的传统文化信息,按字面说成“red and white affairs”的话,那就完全误解原意了,正确的表达为“weddings and funerals”.又如，“白象”一词，如果直译的话则为“whit
12、e elephant”；而在西方则意为“珍贵却又无用的东西”。,文化语境中的审美差异,He is a white-haired boy of the general manager.误译：他是总经理的一个早生白发的儿子。正译：他是总经理的大红人。这里联系到文化语境中的审美取向因素。在审美取向方面，中国传统喜庆偏向红色装饰，有利和积极的方面也常用红色修饰，如“红光满面”，“红红火火”，“大红人”等。而西方则多为白色，这句话中，white-haired boy 和 fair-haired boy 是口语。意为“大红人，宠儿”。不少英语习语在汉语中可以找到完全对等或基本对等的说法，故可以将之译为：他
