3、 teacher.Her namewas Mrs.Thompson.And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the veryfirst day of school,she told the children a lie.Like most teachers,she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same.But that was impossible because there in the front row,slumped in his
4、seat,was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard1.Mrs.Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didntplay well with other children,his clothes were messy and he constantly needed abath.And,Teddy could be unpleasant.,Text A,It got to the point where Mrs.Thompson would actually take del
5、ight inmarking his papers with a broad red pen,making bold Xs and then putting an“F”at the top of his papers.At the school where Mrs.Thompson taught,she was required to review each childs past records and she put Teddys off until last.However,when she reviewed his file,she was in for a surprise.Tedd
6、ys firstgrade teacher wrote,“Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh2.He does his work neatly and has good manners.he is a joy to be around.”His second grade teacher wrote,“Teddy is an excellent student,well-liked byhis classmates.But he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and l
7、ife at home must be a struggle.”,Text A,His third grade teacher wrote,“His mothers death has been hard on him.Hetried to do his best but his father doesnt show much interest in him,and his homelife will soon affect him if some steps arent taken.”Teddys fourth grade teacher wrote,“Teddy is withdrawn
8、and doesnt showmuch interest in school.He doesnt have many friends and sometimes sleeps inclass.”By now,Mrs.Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed ofherself.She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents,wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons,except
9、for Teddys.His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy,brown paper that he got from a grocery bag.,Text A,Mrs.Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents.Some of thechildren started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of thestones missing,and a bottle that was one-qu
10、arter full of perfume.But she stifledthe childrens laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was,putting iton,and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist.Teddy stayed after school thatday just long enough to say,“Mrs.Thompson,today you smelled just like my momused to.”After the children l
11、eft she cried for at least an hour.On the very day,she quitteaching reading,and writing,and arithmetic.Instead she began to teach childrenhow to be a man.,Text A,Mrs.Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy.As she worked withhim,his mind seemed to come alive.The more she encouraged him,the faster
12、 he responded.By the end of the year,Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.A year later,she found a note under her door,from Teddy,telling her that shewas still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life.Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy.He then wrote

15、as yet another letter that spring.Teddy said hed met his girl and was going to be married.He explained that hisfather had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs.Thompsonmight agree to sit in the place at the wedding that was usually reserved for themother of the groom.Of course Mrs.T
16、hompson did.,Text A,At the wedding ceremony,they hugged each other,and Dr.Stoddardwhispered in Mrs.Thompsons ear,“Thank you Mrs.Thompson for believing inme,thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference.”Mrs.Thompson,with tears in her eyes,whispered back
