3、ptwoaquaticfoodexportdestinations,whichhadacombinedvalueofover160billionyen($1.1billion)in2022.TojustifythedischargeofradioactivewaterfromtheincapacitatedFukushimaDaiichinuclearplantintotheocean,theJapanesegovernmenteuphemisticallyreferstoitastreatedwater*.WiththedischargegiventhenodbytheInternation

4、alAtomicEnergyAgency,whichsaidinJulythattheJapanesegovernmentsplanmettheagencyssafetystandards,thereleaseofthewaterfromtheplant,whichisexpectedtotakemorethan30yearstocomplete,hasnowbegun.GiventhelackoftransparencyfromtheJapanesegovernmentinthedecision-makingprocessandintherun-uptothedischargingofthe

5、water,isthereanyreasontothinkitislikelytobeanymoreforthcomingnowthatitisreleasingthewaterintotheocean?IftheradioactivewaterisreallyassafeastheJapanesegovernmentandTokyoElectricPowerCompanyclaim,whydon,ttheyputthewaterintouseforruralirrigation?NowondersomescientistshaveraisedquestionsaboutwhethertheJ

6、apanesegovernmentandTEPCOhavebeensufficientlyforthcomingaboutwhatradioactivematerialsmayremaininthewaterevenafteritistreated.Notsurprisingly,opponentsoftheoceandischargeplaninJapanandinneighboringcountrieshaveurgedJapantochooseasaferdisposalmethod.Thelong-termeffectsonthemarineecosystemandthepotenti

7、alforbioaccumulationinthefoodchainareunknown.Andwhenreleasedintotheocean,thetreatedwatercouldcauseoceanacidification,whichhasbeendescribedasclimatechangesequallyeviltwin.Beyondlossestotheecosystemandbiodiversity,acidificationwillaffectfisheriesandaquaculture,threateningthefoodsecurityformillionsofpe

8、ople.Japansreleaseofthewatermaybealong-lastingdisasterfortheworld,inwhichcaseitwillbeacrimeagainstnatureandhumanity.Thewaterwillspreadtoeverycorneroftheworld,whichmeansothercountriesandregionsfaceathreat.HenceitshighlypossibleformoretofollowthestepsandissuebansonJapaneseaquaticfood.Thegovernmentthatputsthewholeofhumanityshealthatriskshouldbetaughtalessonbythewholeworld.ThatsthepriceJapanhastopayforitsirresponsiblemove,apricemuchhigherthanitspoliticiansanticipated.
