21、swellasenergyaccess,especiallyinthelesselectrifiedcountries.Arabcountriesareendowedwithhugeuntappedrenewableenergyresourcesaswellasplentyopportunitiesforenergyefficiency.Atthesametime,thecostsofenergyfromrenewableenergysourcesaredecliningrapidly,whiletheefficiencyofthetechnologiesarealsocontinuallya

22、dvancing.Duringthelastfew,manyArabcountriessetambitioustargetsforrenewableenergyandenergyefficiency.TheshareofinstalledcapacityforrenewableenergyprojectisincreasinginmanyArabcountries.Apartfromthehydropower,isthelargestshareofenergygenerationinspecificArabcountries,thethreetoptechnologiesarephotovol

23、taics,windenergyandconcertedsolarpower(CSP),whichhavemoredeploymentandmajorcontributionindiversifyingtheenergymixintheArabcountries.Astheenergysectoristhemajorcontributortogreenhousegasemissions,adoptingplansforglobalenergytransitionbecomesnecessarytocutoutharmfulemissionsandphaseoutfossilfuel.Thisw

24、illnotbepossibleunlessthereisahigh-levelmmitmenttothetothedeploymentofmorerenewableenergyandenergyefficiencysolutions.Tomakeoptimaluseofrenewableenergysources,thereisalsoaneedtodevelopandupgradeelectricityinfrastructuretoaccommodatetheadditionalcapacitiesOfrenewableenergysources.Forthefirsttime,andi

25、nlightofthelonglastingpartnershipwiththeUNPD,thiseditionofAFEXcoversthethreeP川arsofsustainableenergyforall:RenewableEnergy,EnergyEfficiencyandElectricityAccess,assessingtheprogressin20Arabcountries,undermorethan40indicatorsfocusedmainlyonpoliciesandstrategies,institutionalandtechnicalcapacities,andi

26、nvestmentenvironment.AFEXisbecominganeffectivetoolforthepolicymakersintheArabregiontoevaluateandcomparetheprogressoftheircountrieswiththeothercountriesintheregionandmakethenecessaryreformstoprogressandachievetheirnationaltargets.IbelievethatourcontinuouscooperationwiththeUNDPandourMemberStates,willc

28、tury.Butclimateactionalsostandsasamajoropportunityforcountriestotransitiontoalowcarbon,sustainableenergyeconomy.ThisisparticularlyimportantfortheArabregion.Whileholdingtheworld,shighestlevelsofsolarradiation,theregiontodatehasmadeonlymodestprogressinexpandingtheshareofrenewableenergyinitsenergymixzc

29、urrentlystandingataround7%.Thisisstartingtochange,withpositivemomentumacrosstheregioninadvancingnewenergytransitionpolicies,resultingforexampleina400%increaseinrenewableenergyinstalledcapacityandinvestmentsoverthepastdecade.Countriesacrosstheregionareincreasinglyprioritizinganaccelerationofactionsth

30、eachievementofSustainableDevelopmentGoal(SDG)7onEnergyandtheNationallyDeterminedContributions(NDCs)undertheParisAgreement.UNDPisproudtohavesupportedtheenhancementofNDCsacrosstheregioninrecentyears,aprocessthatcatalyzedgreaterlevelsofambitioninmanycountriesforanenergytransition.ThenationalNDCclimatep

31、lans,alongsidenationalenergytransitionpolicies,servenowasplatformsforaction,ascountriesseekalargerroleforcleanenergyinvestmentsasameanstodiversifytheireconomies,generatenewhigh-techknowledge-basedjobs,andreducetheenergyintensityofgrowth.Intheoilexportingeconomiesoftheregion,theenergytransitionisbein

32、gharnessedasameansofeconomicdiversification,reducingtheenergyintensityofgrowthandhighpercapitacarbonfootprints.Inmanyothercountries,energytransitionpoliciesandlowcarbontechnologiesarehelpingacceleratelocaldevelopmentgoals,buildingresilienceofpovertyreductionefforts,whileinconflictaffectedcommunities

33、accesstodecentralizedsolarsolutionsishelpingclosetheenergygapforcriticalservices,poweringbasicneeds,schoolsandclinicsandenablingrestorationoflivesandlivelihoods.TheUnitedNationsDevelopmentProgramme(UNDP)isexpandingitsroleasaprovideroftechnicalassistanceacrosstheArabregiontosupportcountriesintheseeff

34、orts.UNDPservesastheUNslargestimplementerofgrantassistanceforagreentransition,withover$300millionoflocalactionprojectsacrosstheregiontoday.ThesecapacitydevelopmentinitiativessupportinnovationandscaleupfinancetoimplementtheSDGsandNDCsinanintegratedmanner,shiftingthetrajectoryofdevelopmenttowardsamore

35、sustainableandresilientfuture.Theroadtothe28thConferenceofthePartiestotheUNFrameworkConventiononClimateChange(COP28)intheUAErepresentsanimportantopportunitytofurtherprofiletheuniqueenergytransitionchallengesandopportunitiesintheArabregionontheglobalstage,andbuildonthisimportantforumtoscaleupstrategi

36、cpartnershipsforacceleratingresults.AspartofthiseffortontheroadtoCOP28zUNDPispleasedtopartnerwiththeRegionalCentreforRenewableEnergyandEnergyEfficiency(RCREEE)inproducingthislatesteditionoftheArabFutureEnergyIndex(AFEX)report.HavingsupportedtheproductionofAFEXreportssince2015,ithasemergedasaleadings

37、tateofenergyreportacrosstheregion,producedbytheregionandfortheregion.AFEXusesover50indicatorstorankcountryannualprogressonregulatoryandinstitutionalstructures,financialinnovations,policyframeworksandpublicandprivateinvestmentsasameansofchroniclingprogressmadebycountriesacrosstheregion,andmakingrecom

38、mendationsforfurtheracceleratingactionstowardsthevisionofSDG7andtheParisAgreement.Thisyear,sreporthighlightstrendsacrossthreetargetsofSDG7:universalaccesstocleanenergy,expandingtheshareofrenewableenergyintheenergymixandincreasedenergyefficiency.Inparticular,thereporthighlightsimportantexamplesofhowi
