1、,Uncle Toms Cabin Stowe,Harriet Beecher Stowe,Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was an American author and abolitionist, whose novel Uncle Toms Cabin (1852) attacked the cruelty of slavery; it reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the U.S. and Britain. It made the political

2、 issues of the 1850s regarding slavery tangible to millions, energizing anti-slavery forces in the American North. It angered and embittered the South. The impact is summed up in a commonly quoted statement apocryphally attributed to Abraham Lincoln. When he met Stowe, it is claimed that he said, “S

3、o youre the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war!“,Hariet Beecher Stowe was partly inspired to create Uncle Toms Cabin by the autobiography of Josiah Henson, a black man who lived and worked on a tobacco plantation in North Bethesda, Maryland. Henson escaped slavery in 1830 by fl

4、eeing to Canada where he helped other fugitive slaves arrive and become self-sufficient, and where he wrote his memoirs.,His creation motive,American social background,Stowe eventually acknowledged that Hensons writings inspired Uncle Toms Cabin. When Stowes work became a best-seller, Henson republi

In his New Orleans house, Uncle Tom makes friends with St Clares daughter, the saintly Little Eva, and her black friend, the impish Topsy. Tom is sold to Simon Legree, a Yankee and a brutal cotton plantation owner. Two of his female slaves pretend to escape and go into hiding. Tom will not re

10、veal their whereabouts and Legree beats the unprotesting Tom to death just before Shelbys son arrives to redeem him.,A parallel plot centeres on Eliza, her child, and her husband George who escape to freedom in Canada using the underground railroad. She was an active abolitionist and it is important to mention that abolitionism, the movement to end the slave trade and eman

12、cipate slaves was rather popular that times. There was no more slavery in the northern states; however it was still very strong in the southern. And even in the south in those states bordering the northern there already existed some movements for emancipation. And in one of such states - in Kentucky

13、 - we meet the heroes on the first pages of the novel.,The main theme of the book,The main theme of the book is the cruelty and immorality of slavery and it is revealed practically on every page. A great part of the novel is dedicated to the discussions about slavery, and we can notice the rough div

14、ision into those characters who are against it and those who consider it to be natural, normal and convenient and black people to be a “degraded race” who are like animals and even worse, they have no feelings, no family values and affections.,Another major theme,Another major theme of Uncle Toms Ca

15、bin is the moral power and sanctity of women. Through characters like Eliza, who escapes from slavery to save her young son (and eventually reunites her entire family), or Little Eva, who is seen as the “ideal Christian”, like an angel the author shows how she believed women could save those around

16、them from even the worst injustices.,Observation 1,We can also observe some other subthemes throughout the text, such as the moral authority of motherhood and the redeeming possibilities offered by Christianity, the author emphasizes the connections between these and the horrors of slavery.,Observat

17、ion 2,Stowes puritanical religious beliefs are revealed in final part of the novel, when she explains the nature of Christianity and how she feels Christian theology is fundamentally incompatible with slavery. This theme is most evident when Tom urges St. Clare to “look away to Jesus” after the death of St. Clares beloved daughter Eva.
