Many factors, such as the exquisite and circuitous clue, the actors wonderful performance, the fantastic music, contribute to its success. This paper aims to analyze the changeable char
2、acteristics of Benjamin to reveal the meaningful information and give some comments on films music、directorial art from the professional aspect of filmmaking. Key words: Benjamin music art comedy profundity I. IntroductionThe Graduate, which has been cherished and praised widely by many people since
3、 it appeared, is an excellent representative of the anticulture works at that time in America. Because of the depression in America after the Second World War, the new generation started to be suspicious of the ancient tradition and rule of capitalistic. Benjamin is one of the confused generations.
4、This film shows the audience the intricate story happened after his graduation to provide us some important points, which I would mention in the following part. Whats more, while appreciating The Graduate, we can benefit a lot from the film. IIThe star-Benjamin in this film has a complicated charact
5、er. The first part of the body aims to analyze Benjamins characteristics according to the order of the development of the plots to reveal some meaningful information the film conveys. 1. Blue BenjaminWhat can we realize from the beginning of this film is that the innocence and confused look that Ben
6、jamin possessed even after completing four years of college. From the later part we can learn that Benjamin is an excellent graduate, he ought to be confident and optimistic but why he is so blue? Is it because of his worries about his future? The face filled with melancholy、puzzle and hesitation ap
7、peared in this film for many times .As a son of a welloff family， together with his distinguished perform in college, his future must be quite a success. But the fact is that he is bothered by the coming future. Benjamin was the prodigal son who did everything to make his parents happy. Personally s
8、peaking, I consider that he is tired of the planned coming things and the planned future. The planned parties by his parents seemed to fail to arouse his interest. There are not alternatives in his “happy life”, his destiny seem to be fixed. Gradually, the passion for life, the longing for the futur
9、e faded away in the impulsive atmosphere. His life fell into a pit of dead water step by step.2. Cowardly BenjaminBenjamin did nothing but acceptation when he was confronted with so many requirements made by his parents. He did everything for his parents. Even when he voiced complaints to his father
10、 about the party or the diving suit; he was never courageous to say “definitely no” to his father. Meanwhile, when faced with the fixed and confusing future, he chose to be infatuated with Mrs. Robinson, he chose to forget himself. He did not even come up with an idea of how to get rid of his presen
11、t state. So, we define him here as cowardly Benjamin.3. Selfrespected BenjaminTo begin with, I have a question for you. The question is why Benjamin was so angry when Mrs. Robinson said to him that he was not allowed to meet her daughter. My answer is that maybe all of a sudden he realized that bein
12、g a lover of middleaged woman means that he is losing his true himself little by little. He is not the splendid one .Maybe he considered himself as a failure when compared with beautiful and pure Elaine .He is not the deserve match. A selfnegation made him felt extremely angry. Because he is a perso
13、n with high self-respect. He usually considered himself a success. 4. Honest BenjaminWhile shaving his whiskers, his mother came into the bathroom to asked the staff concerning where was him these nights and how did he spent, his untrue answers made Benjamin hurt his neck and hand by razor blade. We
14、 can see that he is an honest boy who nearly seldom told lies. This quality was also reflected during the first date with Elaine .In order to leave a bad impression on Elaine; he took her to some places he never went to. However, Elaines tears embarrassed him. The honesty in the bottom of his heart
15、forced him to tell the truth. 5. Brave Benjamin Benjamin was never brave throughout the movie until he met Elaine. Benjamin presented the firm resolution in the later part of this film. It seemed that the melancholy、puzzle and hesitation was abandoned ,instead ,he began to be passionate and brave to
16、 face against the common views to pursuit his own true love. Only when he met Elaine, and foresee the life that he had been longing for a long time, did he have the courage to break loose the planned life. Finally, he started to make a self-criticism .At the turn of his destiny, he found the directi
17、on, found the couragefilled self after meeting Elaine. From Los Angeles to Berkeley, the courage Benjamin owned is limitless. In the process of pursuit Elaine, he always mustered up his courage in front of various kinds of ordeals. So finally, he succeeded. Through this process, Benjamin grew to be
18、a life fighter with his heart full of courage. That is Benjamins renewal!.In the second part, I would like to analyze the music, perform art and directorial art in a more professional way by applied some film professional knowledge to some degree to illustrate what important roles they had played in
19、 the success of making a film.1. Music.The music from Simon & Garfunkel is great. Three well known songs (Mrs. Robinson, The Sound of Silence and Scarborough Fair) play over and over again some people will get tired of it after a while. Actually, the tone and motif of this film is almost peaceful. I
20、 liked the songs enough to not have that problem. However, in my point of view, at most of time, the music can help to express the emotion perfectly and properly. 2. The performances artThe performances made by the actors and actresses are quite outstanding. What I want to mention is the actor who p
21、lays the role of Benjamin did a good job. After we finished appreciation of this film, we can still remember the big, puzzled and blue eyes of Benjamin. His wonderful performance reveals the hesitation and puzzle at the bottom of his heart thoroughly which made the character forever lasting, the mov
22、ie attractive.3. Directorial genius Nichols directorial genius (he won an Oscar for the film) really shows in the opening party sequence celebrating Bens arrival home. There is a close-up of Bens face as he stumbles his way through the event, listening to advice and shaking hands with the faceless (
23、much like his future) masses. The camera moves in such a way that a feeling of claustrophobia comes over the viewer. They are overcome by what is going on around them, much like Benjamin is at this crossroads in his life. Another example is when Ben first arrives at the fateful hotel where he meets
24、Mrs. Robinson for sex. He walks around the lobby, suspicious that the desk clerk is on to him, and then he attempts to walk into a room. Only a large group of the elderly walks out, and Benjamin stands there holding the door for them. Then he proceeds inside, only to be passed by a group of high school students. This image once again reinforces the crossroads that Ben is at in his life. III. Conclusion:
