、Cable testerCable Ethernet Cable And Local Area Networks Ethernet is a technology used to manage Local Area Networks (LANs) and follows IEE 802.3 standards. There are many types of cabling used for Ethernet: * 10 Base 5: Also called thicknet with maximum length of 500 meters. The bus topography is f
、ollowed using 75 ohm coaxial cable. * 10 Base 2: Also called as thiknet with maximum length of 200 meters. The bus topography is followed using RJ-58 coaxial cable with each device having BNCT connectors. * 10 Base T: Follows star topography using twisted pair wires connecting each device to a hub.
、This type of cabling defines need for electrical properties of the entire wiring. These requirements are tested by using cable tester. * 10 Broad 36: Operates on closed-circuit cable television systems and is based on broadband Ethernet design. The Ethernet cables are longer with lots of wires. To c

Initially Ethernet cabling involved coaxial cables acting as the mean of communication over a LAN. The network managed or made by using Ethe
、rnet cables used to be complex until the use of twisted pair cables to reduce the installation cost, to manage point-to-point connection and to increase reliability. Ethernet cable color code The Ethernet cables follow certain color code for wiring, which if not arranged properly may cause loss of c
、onnectivity. There are two standards that are being followed , the TIA/EIA 568-A standard and the TIA/EIA 568-B standard. The TIA/EIA 568-B is an updated version of TIA/EIA 568-A. Both of them specify the T-568A and T-568B pin-outs to use unshielded twisted pair and RJ connectors. Normally standard
、straight through cables are used for Ethernet connections. One end of the cable should be wired using T-568A standard while the other end should be wired using T-568B standard in order to remember the color scheme. To wire Ethernet cable To wire an Ethernet cable the various tools that are required
、are a CAT 5 cable, RJ45 connectors, a crimper, wire cutters, cable tester and wire stripper. The cable consists of eight wires covered with an outer sheath or a jacket. Each pair follows a particular color coding, i.e., a solid colored wire paired with a wire of white background with stripes of the
、same color. Four basic colors are orange, blue, green and brown. Steps to wire the Ethernet cable: 1. Strip off the cable. 2. Untwist the wires but not beyond the exposed point. 3. Cut the wires equally and arrange the wires according to the color coding scheme. 4. Fit the wires inside the RJ45 end
、in a proper order. 5. Crimp the RJ45 end with a crimper tool. 6. The cable tester is used to check the proper connectivity. Cabling The Cat 5 Cable The term Cat 5 cable stands for Category 5 cable. It consists of a twisted pair of Ethernet cable and is used for networking. The cable facilitates the
、high signal integration and may be shielded or unshielded. There are four twisted pairs enclosed in a cable jacket that helps in retaining a signal-to-noise ratio and is therefore not effected by any external interference or by any other twisted pair cable. As a result any crosstalk or leakage of so
、und is avoided. These cables normally support 100 Mbit/s networks. The core cable is used to connect the wall socket to the patch panel socket while the stranded cable is used to connect the hub to the patch panel socket or a wall port to a computer. The cable and connector types and cable topologie
、s are defined by telecommunication standards called TIA/EIA-568-B. The connectors used to connect Cat 5 cables are called 8P8C modular connectors or simply RJ-45. There are two pin/pair assignments called T568A and T568B, that define the order of wire connection. As mentioned earlier, the cable jack
、et consists of four twisted pairs of cable. The basic pair of cables are blue, orange, green and brown in color for first, second, third and fourth pairs respectively. Each pair consists of two wires, one of a solid color and other one is white with stripes of one of the above mentioned colors. Wiri
、ng Cat 5 are the uncovered twisted pair cables facilitating the high signal integrity. They have a frequency of 100 Mhz and are normally used for home or small business. They are available as stranded or solid core cables. Solid core cables are normally used to wire a house. The following are the st
、eps to wire cat 5 cables: * Expose or strip off a cat 5 cable. * Untwist the pair but not beyond the exposed point. * Arrange the colored wires. * Trim the wires and leave them exposed from the sheath. * Insert the exposed wires into RJ45 end in a proper order and in a manner that the cable sheath e

A structured cabling for Cat 5 cabling means to wire a house or an office in a way that facilitates the b
、est communication following certain standards. The best way defined by these standards is to lay the wires in a star manner so that all the cables terminate at a single point or a patch panel. 19、d test Cat 5 Network Cables: Simplifying LAN The Cat 5 Network Cables are used to connect two or more networks and can be used to form small and simple home or office LANs. The best feature of Cat 5 Network Cable is its low inductance. It is used as a high-end speaker cable. The low inductance is on
、e of the required quality for high-end speaker cable. The lower the inductance, the higher the signal rise time. Twisted pair cables are used as they help in maintaining a low inductance as each wire in the pair has opposite polarity. A single cable jacket consists of four twisted pair cable. The fo

Each pair contains of two wires, of which, one is of solid color while the other contains stripes of the same color on a background of white. The cables are terminated with CAT 5 RJ-45 modular plug. This braided or twisted structure r
、educes the asymmetrical interactions. A cheap and pure copper wire is used to make the speaker cable which, at the same time, is oxygen free. The cable is insulated with Teflon, which is one of the best dielectrics available. Making a Cat 5 Cable Network In this section we are going to discuss how t
、o make Cat 5 network cables while constructing your home or office Local Area Network (LAN). The emphasis is more on making a fast and simple LAN following two Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) network standards, 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX. If you are about to start a small LAN network for your home or off
、ice, the 100BASE-TX standards should be used. Stranded copper cables are not oxygen free as oxidation normally builds up in between the strands forming copper oxide and thus can not be used for making these cables. Copper oxide is a semi-conductor effecting the signal quality. Low inductance is one
、of the best quality of Cat 5 Network Cable. High capacitance is one of the worst quality as it effects the amplifiers stability. This can be avoided by using longer cables. The stranded cables are more flexible as compared to solid core wire but at the same time it is prone to degradation by moistur
、e infiltration. They should not be used for cable having a length of more than three meters. Solid core cable is normally used for home network and if you are using a notebook computer, stranded wire patch cables are recommended. Try not to bend the cable too much and check that they should not run
、along with or parallel to power cables. If you club them together into a bundle, try not to bind them very tightly. You should always try to keep them away from noise and do not overstretch them. CAT5 Connectors For Network Cables Connectors are plugs which are used to connect two or more computers
、together to form a network. The connector used for CAT5 cables are 8P8C or RJ-45 connectors. 8P8C stands for Eight Position, Eight Conductors. They are basically modular connectors. The RJ-45 connector does not use all the eight conductors while 8P8C uses all the eight conductors. Apart from this, t
、here is hardly any difference between an 8P8C and a RJ-45 connector. The 8P8C connectors are mainly used in Ethernet networks. It consists of a female socket and a male plug. These 8P8C connectors are used because they can be easily plugged or unplugged and are relatively smaller in size. The 8P8C c
、onnectors consist of eight positions for eight connectors. The wires are terminated with T568A or T568B pin/pair organization following TIA/EIA-568-B. It is often recommended to wire one end as T568A and the other end as T568B. Some common features of 8P8C and a RJ-45 connectors are: * They are wate
、rproof * Easy to use * Smaller in size and hence easy to relocate. The outer shield of these connectors provide protection from dust and moisture and facilitates better data transmission. The 8P8C connector for twisted pair cable The 8P8C plug is normally used with flat cables. The wiring is based o
、n the physical compatibility of the wire and the connector. In the earlier pin out structure, the outermost pair was not able to meet the electrical requirements of high speed LAN. To overcome this two standards called T568A and T568B were used. Ways to wire an 8P8C or RJ-45 connector with CAT5 cabl
、e * Strip off the outer sheath or jacket of the cable to expose the wires. Arrange them in the order specified by the color coding scheme. Flatten the wires so that the could easily be inserted into the connector. * After aligning the wires trim them and then untwist the wires. * Insert the wires in
、side the connector so that each wire is placed properly into its channel. Make sure that each wire reaches the end beneath the gold crimping connectors. * Hold the cable so that it can be crimped properly using a crimping tool. * If the cable is stranded, repeat the above steps. Ways To Make A Cat 5
、 Patch For Your Network Cat 5 cables consist of four twisted pair of wires that are connected with RJ 45 connectors. Cat 5 stands for Category 5 and supports networks with frequency 100 Mhz and a speed of 1000 Mbps. Cat 5e is an advanced version of Cat 5. Cat 5e does not support long distance cables
、. To connect two devices and to communicate the signals, patch cables are used. These patch cables are basically copper wires or fiber optic cables. These are a type of electrical cables and are also known as patch cords. Patch cables are normally shorter in length (approximately two meters) and are
、 available in many different colors. Due to this they are distinguished easily. The type of patch cables like microphone cable, headphone cable, XLR connector cable, RCA connector cable and TRS connector cable. Circuits are connected through patch cord on the patch panel. The patch cord are used to
、connect the components that are arranged in a stacked manner. They are also used for passing signals through patch panel. They are also used to prevent attenuation and signal loss. It is also used to connect the computer to a router through a switch while a crossover cable is normally used to direct
、ly connect two computers. This connection is also called a peer-to-peer connection. It is always advised to use cables whose maximum length is 100 meters. You should always prefer a switch over a hub as the former supports signals. How to make Cat 5e patch cable * Strip off or pull out the outer cov

If somehow the outer sheath of any wire is affected, it will result into crosstalk. * Untwist the pairs so that you can hold them easily. * Arrange the wires
、according to the specified method. Two commonly used methods are 568A and 568B. * Hold the wires together and make sure that they are arranged according to the specified color scheme. Then cut the wires evenly. * Insert the wires inside the RJ-45 plug. Make sure that all the wires are inserted prope

Benefits Of Plenum Cat 5 Cable Before discussing a Plenum Cat 5 cable in detail you should try and understand the meaning of the word Plenum. Plenum is a vacant space facilitating
、 air circulation and which can also be utilized for different purposes. The space between the ceiling or raised floor is generally called the plenum. The plenum space is required inside buildings to spread network cables, power cables and different pipelines that provide a variety of services inside
、 the building. The plenum space can prove to be harmful if in case fire reaches this space. The deposit of fresh oxygen present there can help to fan the fire. The plenum cables are covered with a jacket or sheath made of either PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) or FEP(Fluorinated Ethylene Polymer). PVC and
、FEP are fire proof plastics. PVC is more flexible and is used to make the wires and cables bend. The cables that are not run under plenum spaces are called riser cables. It hardly matters if riser cables are not fire proof. Riser cables can always be replaced by plenum cables but the reverse cannot
、happen. CAT5 cables normally come as four pairs of wire wrapped inside a protective sheath. They are typically round shaped. The core of the wire comes in two forms, solid and stranded core. The stranded cored cables are used for patch cabling and connecting network card to the terminal. The solid c
、ored cable usually runs from wall termination up to the patch panel. This solid core cable is also available in a plastic sheath or plenum covering. The plenum CAT 5 cable is almost same to the CAT5 cable. However, the unique feature is that it is covered with a plastic sheath which is fireproof and
、 which prevents any damage due to fire. These plenum CAT 5 cables are used in areas where chances are that a network cable will pass through a region prone to fire eruptions. Some common features and applications of Plenum CAT 5 cables: Applications * Remote controls. * Intercom * Burglar alarms * C
、ircuits that are power limited * Smoke detection Features * High quality mechanical and electrical properties. * Resistant to oil or moisture. * Clears the flame and smoke test. These cables are user friendly but costly due to their unique features. But the users are ready to pay a hefty amount as they cannot ignore the benefits offered.
