1、context is important in learning foreign language语境对于学习外语的重要性Context is important in learning foreign language (语境对于学习外语的重要性) Context is important and essential in learning a foreign language due to the contexts effect on the comprehension of the words and expressions.It determines the speakers use
2、and the hearers interpretation of what is said to him or her.If one realizes the word or the expression apart from the context,some misconceptions will arise.In short,without the context,the meaning of the word and the expression cannot be accurately defined. Context refers to the environment of lan
3、guage use.There are two kinds of contexts,namely linguistic context and non-linguistic context. Linguistic context is concerned with the probability of a words co-occurence or collocation with another word,which forms part of the meaning of the word,and also with the part of text that precedes and f
4、ollows a particular utterance.The linguistic context includes lexical context,grammatical context and verbal context. Lexical context can help us understand the possible changes of meanings of the words in different collocation with other words.For example:the word“black”. The ordinary meaning of th
5、e word “black”is a adjective which descirbes the objects color,such as “black hair” and “black dress”.When “black” collocates with some other words,the meaning of the word has changed.“A black look”refers to an angry look.“In the black”means having money in a bank account.“Black sheep”refers to a pe
6、rson who is regarded as a disgrace or failure by his family or peer group. Grammmatical context can help us understand the meaning of the words in different grammatical structures.For example,the word“able”. The first sentence is that“such an able man to help you,you will surely succeed sooner or la
7、ter.”The second sentence is that“He is able to accomplish the task ahead of time”.The two sentences have two different grammatical structures.The first sentence is independent non-finite verb structure.The phrase“such an able man”and“to help you”exist a relationship of subject-verb.The second senten
8、ce is a subject-verb-object structure.Therefore,with the grammatical context,we can know the meaning of the word“able”. Verbal context can help us guess the meaning of the words from various context clues. For example,the word “seal”.The first sentence“the seal could not be found.”The word“seal”mean
9、s an official mark put on a paper that gives information or proof to show that it is really what it seems to be.Then,look at the second sentence“the police sealed all the exits to prevent the criminal from escaping”.In this case,the word“seal”means to close tightly or cover so that it is not possibl
10、e for anything to get through.If we do not realize the word with the verbal context,we can easily consider the word as a large sea animal with a tail and broad flat limbs for swimming.So on the basis of the verbal context,we can know the meaning of the word clearly. Non-linguistic context means that
11、 every utterance occurs in a particular spatiotemporal situation,the main components of which include the place and time of the utterance,the speaker and the hearer,the actions they are performing at the time,the various objects and events existent in the situation.For example:“How did it go？”.As to
12、 the expression,there exist numerous explanations without specific situation.So,if it takes place between two high school students talk and they went through a test yesterday.In this case,we can see that one of the two students ask the other whether he or she did well in the test.But if it occurs ou
13、t of the operation room and the speaker is the family member of the patient,we can know that the family member wants to know the result of the operation.In a word,the situation provides a clear clue for understanding the meaning of the word or expression. To conclude,context plays a significant role in learning foreign language.Without the context,the meaning and connotation of the words and expressions cannot be well-defined and then we may easily have incorrect comprehension of the words and expressions.
