、an unfavorable social phenomenon; more and more teenagers become indulged in Internet. In this thesis, it gives explanation of the social phenomenon. People should recognize that Internet has two sides, positive sides and negative sides. From the negative side, Internet is not only harmful to people

、s physical health, especially to their eyes, but also occupies their spare time and consumes their energy. From the positive side, teenagers can broaden their eyes through the Internet; they can communicate with others through Internet. And the Internet holds over more traditional media, like televi

、sion and radio. They can communicate with friends and those they dont know, to play games with people on the other side of the world, and even to become a publisher. So my thesis purpose is to have a brief introduction to the Internet, and point out the negative and positive effects of the Internet

、on teenagers. Finally, this thesis shows the proper way for teenagers, and gives the appropriate methods for teenagers using Internet. Brief Introduction to InternetA. The Definition to Internet Believe it or not, Internet was created in 1969 by the United States military during the Cold War. It was

、 meant to be a “nuke-proof” communications network. Today, Internet spreads across the globe and consists of countless networks and computers, allowing millions of people to share the information. Internet is now maintained by the major Internet service providers such as Sprint, GTE, ANS, and UUNET.

、 Because these providers make huge amounts of revenue from Internet, they are motivated to maintain consistent and fast connections. Maybe, most people consider that the function of Internet is similar to the function of the World Wide Web; however, they are wrong. The World Wide Web is one of the m

、any features of Internet. And E-mail, FTP, and instant messaging are also features of the Internet. The World Wide Web is what you are browsing right now. On October 24, 1995, the Federal Networking Council unanimously passed a definition of the term of Internet. The definition was developed in cons

、ultation with the leadership of Internet and Intellectual Property Rights Communities. The following information reflects our definition to term Internet. “Internet” refers to the global information system.1. Being logically linked together by a globally unique address space based on the Internet Pr

、otocol or its subsequent extensions. 2. Being able to support communication.3. Providing, using or making accessible, either publicly or privately, high level services layered on the communications. In the English dictionary, there is the exact definition to “Internet”. The “Internet” means a network

、 in which digital computers are connected to those of another manufacture, information highway and resources.B. Peoples View on InternetIf they want to have a better understanding of the peoples idea about Internet, they should have discussed all angles of the Internet. They should analyze Internet

、from three aspects:Firstly, the Information of Using the InternetThe top ten social networking sites now reach a huge 45% of active Web users, according to Nielsen, which just released its latest figures on the phenomenons growth and popularity. Together, the ten sites have grown 47% in the past yea

、rs from 46.8 million unique visitors in April 2005 to 68.8 million last month. As the Washington Post reported, “MySpace grew from 8.2 million users in April 2005 to 38.4 million last month, and MSN Spaces, up from 1.9 million to 7.1 million over the same period.” All these data show that the Intern

、et has become more and more popular in the world. It has become a main trend in the world. They should use Internet do more things than imagination.Secondly, teenagers view on the InternetThe debate on teenagers and Internet are being shaped by major crosscurrents in the world, and they have little

、to do with teenagers and Internet. The crosscurrents involve not so much constitutional and technological issues, but more what is happening to American families and parental authority in a rapidly changing society. Children and teenagers use Internet because they enjoy doing so. Of course, they als

、o regard it as a main source of information for their studies, but first and foremost it is a fun medium. Teenagers love the feeling of being anonymous online, or anonymous to all but their closest friends. Many of the communication tools and portal sites like Yahoo and MSN allow teenagers to create

、 a persona for themselves. They can even choose a 3D image - a small personalized graphic - that will appear on the screen to represent to them. And of course they do not have to be one person they can have many different personas. Imagine being logged on to a chat room and playing two different rol

、es, they could chat to themselves, and then totally confuse a third person who joins the room. That is what teenagers want to do. For example, Kim, a 15 years old UKs student, and has a long experience on Internet. He says: “The great thing about Internet is that a person can experience, and partici

、pate in various ways and reach their own conclusion. I dont feel the need of experts to tell us what does work or not. We can try it ourselves and find out.”Teenagers view both their mobile phones and Internet as the ultimate private communication medium. Even some children say: “If you took away my

、 right to use Internet, you would take away a part of me.” All of these, they can say that Internet has become one of the important parts in their lives. In their eyes, Internet brings them too much happiness. They cannot live in the world without Internet.Thirdly, the adults view on the InternetFor

、 most adults, Internet is difficult to imagine. This thesis means they have gone into it and they can really go into a different world. They think the Internet should fall under the same guidelines as every other FCC regulated industry. Its a form of communication. However, as for using Internet tee

、nagers, different people have different opinions. Some people think there should be a ban on the Internet. They argue that using Internet not only does harm to teenagers physical health, especially to their eyes, but also occupies their spare time and consumes their energy, rendering them unable to

、accomplish their tasks efficiently. Others assume that if we ban Internet, some of teenagers will feel dull about their lives. In their opinion, teenagers at present are over-occupied by their studies. After completing their intense work, they should be entitled to enjoy themselves, of course, inclu

、ding the Internet. However, most of their parents consider Internet as a bad thing for their children. They think most teenagers as unguided by moral principles. Therefore, it is vulnerable to bad influences. Parents are working in longer hours and with more jobs, thus, many are inattentive to their

、 children, leaving them without strong role models. Meanwhile, though our world is in peace, the parents are in a dangerous world closing in, such as violence, bombings, drugs, and sex. They consider the school, neighborhood, or the street is the dangerous places. The Relationship between Teenagers

、and InternetA. Negative Effects on TeenagersAs they can see, some of the bad things have happened to children today. They are fearful of having no rules and no limits on Internet. It seems that they are pushing teenagers into a grown-up world sooner than they need to be there. People are simply worr

、ied to death that their children are going to be exposed to awful things, unknown to them and outside their control. Internet is the thing that teenagers cannot control it. Once they are immersed in Internet, they open to anybody, and anybody can access them. It is different with TV and it is very d

、ifferent with what was done in the past, because it is very, very intimate. It is not just something on TV, something that is talking back to them. The following are the things that Internet has negative effects on teenagers.1. Internet can do harm to teenagers physical organs, such as kids necks, th

、umbs, backs, and so on. A study from 2000 in the United States on the effects of laptop computers in schools showed that 60% of students aged 10 to 17 complained of neck and back discomfort while using Internet for a long time.2. It puts teenagers at risk, when they talk about sex with people they m

、eet online. Internet can search various kinds of information. If teenagers put the dirty words to search on Internet, they can get everything about the words, no matter the bad thing or good. They could download violent games or porn films from the Internet. Recently a father who tells his daughter

、she needs to turn off her drug when she is on Internet. Porn that can be directed to teenagers through Internet cannot be controlled at this point. Or contact that they can have with people that they would not ever let their child talk to. The BBC refers to a new study on this sponsored by PC securi

、ty firm McAfee: “It is well known that visiting sites offering porn, gambling and fee. MP3 leaves users at serious risk of falling victim to spy ware or ad ware.” Teenagers should be very careful when searching for any free downloads like ring tones, information and screensavers. For example, New Yo

、rk Times reports that there would be child traffickers in child porn on the Internet. One person of 28-year-old computer consultant in Detroit has been arrested. He ran child porn Web sites. Teenagers only need to charge a monthly fee for videos of his performing various sex acts. Under such inducem

、ent, some teenagers cannot refuse it. It just likes a drug. When teenagers contract with them more deeply, they will be easier to make mistakes. That is banned in the moral world. Placing primary reliance on the current technology protection measures is insufficient protection for children of this a

、ge. These systems do not provide sufficiently reliable protection against accidental access to material that could be very disturbing to younger children. Environments that have been established for children on commercial systems present concerns because of the level of commercialism present on the

、sites accessed through these systems. Such systems may be safe environments in terms of pornography, but they have not been established as educationally enriching environments. Too many of the sites accessed through these systems have been established for the purpose of promoting the sale of product

、s to teenagers. And the other two terms on the most risky list are “WinMX” and “download Yahoo Messager”. The danger they are talking about here is that the sites these searches lead to might download to the family PC something else altogether. It enables hackers to take control of their PC.Meanwhil

、e, in one research, parents identified three main problems that crowded out almost all others when presented with a list of ten things that could happen to their children on the Internet. These are listed below in order of importance.1. Children get access to indecent material through the Internet2.

、 Improper advances to children from someone on the Internet3. Personal information being collected from kids on the InternetOf course, all the things have the reason. After contemplation and meditation, they can find three possible reasons to account for this trend. First of all, the network technol

、ogy is developing at a fantastic speed and Internet becomes more and more advanced and attractive. Whats more, many students lack self-control to such an extent that they use Internet for long hours even if they know it is harmful to both their mental and physical health. In the third place, the uni

、versity authority and teachers are too lenient with the students. They attach great importance to imparting knowledge and more or less overlook students personality development.B. Positive Effects on TeenagersInternet holds over more traditional media, like television and radio. Teenagers can commun

、icate with friends and those they dont know, to play games with people on the other side of the world, and even to become a publisher. The latter task has become easier -they dont need to look for a lot of materials. They can simply use the information provided by Internet. The Children Going Online research showed that some 90% of 9 to 19 yeas old who use Internet do so for the purposes of school homework or project
