1、Syllabus for BMGT496 A801 Business EthicsSession Date:Spring Session 1, 2011 Jan. 24, 2011 April 3, 2011Lecturer: Isidra (Cyd) Coloma, Ph.D.Lecturers e-mail address: icolomaasia.umuc.eduCourse Description(Fulfills the civic responsibility requirement.) A study of the relationship of business ethics

2、and social responsibility in both domestic and global settings. Ethical and moral considerations of corporate conduct, social responsibilities, policies, and strategies are explored. Emphasis is on the definition, scope, application, and analysis of ethical values as they relate to issues of public

3、consequence in both the domestic and global environments. Course IntroductionThe catalog states that this course is, A study of the standards of business conduct, moral values, and the role of business in society, with consideration of the sometimes conflicting interests of and claims on the firm an

4、d its objectives. But this description leaves the false impression that this course is only the study of what is a good firm and what is a bad firm. Rather, the purpose of this course is to create a sensitivity in the manager for the active role that the modern concept of social responsiveness (the

5、old Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) concept) requires from management. We will learn that there is actually a standard of CSR which business can apply. This requires the firm not to develop some attract moral standard but to look to the community in which it lives for this standard. This cours

6、e will teach the process by which the manager can learn with this moral standard of the community is.The fundamental and very important conclusion that this course teaches is CSR is perfectly consistent with profit maximization. Therefore, this course is important since managers must recognize that

7、business conduct is constrained not only by its economic environment, which the basic business curricula emphasizes, but by the social, political, cultural, and ecological environments in which business also finds itself. In this course, we will study the many dimensions of this environment and how

8、a business must incorporate the demands of these various environments and their stakeholders into its basic policies or moral code of its corporate culture. Statement of Time CommitmentOnline courses are designed to mirror the time commitment of face-to-face courses. For example, if you spend 3 hour

9、s in a traditional classroom each week, you should plan to spend 3 hours in your online classroom each week. As in a face-to-face class, you will also need to allocate time outside of the online classroom to complete reading and other assignments. As a general rule, you should plan to schedule 2 - 3

10、 hours outside of the classroom for every hour you spend in the classroom. For a typical 3-credit online course, you should be prepared to commit a total of approximately 9 - 12 hours per class per week.Course Goals/Objectives After completing this course, you should be able to: identify and define

13、nments, case analysis, problem solving, research, presentations, and discussions develop applicable skills and knowledge in the relevant cross-curricular initiatives, including effective writing, information literacy, globalization, computerization, historical perspective, and civic responsibility A

17、estions from the course material that is covered in the first five (5) weeks of the class. Proctored Examination. The proctored exam will consist of some multiple choices and essay questions (testing your overall comprehension and integration of the material). The course material covered on the proc

18、tored examination will come from the reading requirements for Chapters 11-18. To do well on this test, you will also need to participate actively in the on-line discussions and read the comments of others. For information on Proctored Exam procedures, please review the Administrative Policies, Proce

19、dures, and Practices section at the end of this syllabus.Approval for students to take the proctored examination outside of Week 10 of the UMUC Asia term rests solely with the course instructor/lecturer. Understand that the student must have very good reasons that can be substantiated through a resp

20、onsible individual, such as, your supervisor, or manager. Let me know and I will take necessary action or tell you whom to contact for the administration of the proctored examination outside of Week 10, or if you changed locations from the beginning of the course. Assignments, Conference and Discuss

21、ions Participation For this class, you are required to actively participate in the conferences. There will be a new conference each week, and you must be prepared to make contributions in every conference. Discussions. One of the most important and enjoyable parts of the course is the exchange of id

22、eas that occur in the conferences. This is the part of our activity that substitutes for the face-to-face classroom. I want you to be very active in the discussions and expect you to engage both your fellow students and me. I will give you information and some questions for discussion. You should ch

23、allenge ideas, expand on issues and take exception with conclusions. I want to see you think through the issues and pool the wisdom of the class to advance our knowledge. I am not interested in counting who logs on the most, or whose notes are the longest. Short, pithy messages that further the disc

24、ussion are the most worthwhile. Few students can achieve a high grade in this class without regularly taking part in the discussions. Not participating is like not attending class in a face-to-face environment, and it is difficult to get all of the material in this class without taking part in the d

25、iscussions.Be neat and systematic when solving homework problems and taking examinations. Network and confer with fellow students; they can be among your best teachers. Voluntary group work is encouraged; many students have found that working with others on the various problems presented reinforces

26、their understanding of the subject matter. Always incorporate the concepts and terminology that you have learned when preparing submissions. Students are expected to demonstrate an ease in using what they have learned to support their answers. No course work will be accepted after the last class mee

27、ting of the course because there is no provision for make-up work or extra credit. Points will be deducted for any late Homework assignments. No points will be awarded for any late Discussion Topic submissions. No Incompletes will be provided. Homework, discussion topics and examinations must be pos

28、ted by the date specified to the location designated by the professor. Project DescriptionStudents will be required to write a 5-7 page paper on a subject present in current management studies. Papers must be double spaced in 12 point font (Times New Roman) with 1 inch margins. Use the American Psyc

29、hological Association (APA) style to document sources used in the paper. As with any research paper, students MUST cite their work along with a work cited or bibliography. The papers Citations should not consist, solely of web sites. Paper topics must be submitted for discussion and approval. Furthe

Students who need to test outside of Proctored Exam week should review the information about early/late testing at http:/

Computer-Based Proctored Exams are a popular option for students testing at designated UMUC Computer Labs (only available during the scheduled Proctored Exam Week). Ask your local UMUC Asia/Europe Field Reps or

46、Computer Lab Staff if their location is participating. Students at other locations or using an alternate proctor must take paper exams.Important reminder: Keep your professor informed of your testing status. Occasionally exams (particularly paper exams) take time to reach the professor or there are

47、problems with exams being delivered. Therefore, when Proctored Exam week arrives many professors will create a special Proctored Exam Reporting conference in the WebTycho classroom where you can report when, where and how you took the exam (by paper or computer).
