2、多,那么英语就越说的准确和流利。在中国各高校多年的英语教育中,有许多可取之处可以被今后的英语教育所利用,但是中国英语教育还暴露出很多的弊端和不足之处,需要改进。这篇论文主要探索中国大学英语口语教育的利弊。首先分析了中国英语口语教育的现状,包括中国英语口语教育的优势和有力的地方。但是英语作为第二语言,在英语口语教育中难免有不足的地方,对于弊端和不足的地方,作者也提供了方式和方法怎样来提高口语水平,只有找到问题,我们才能解决问题。通过论文的分析和有效的方法,大学生口语水平有望得到提高。关键词:英语口语;利弊;教学Abstract Nowadays, English is becoming a ne

3、w trend. More and more people are recognizing the importance of English learning. Most Students in China are learning English as a second language, however, they often feel uncomfortable to use English because they are afraid that they will not be understood correctly,which result in the poor commun

4、icative abilities of most students. It is important that a person who is learning to speak English practice use the language. The more a student practices her English communicative skills, the more fluent and correct a person speaks English. During many years English teaching in China, there are few

5、 advantages that can be used in the further English teaching. And there are also some disadvantages that needed to be improved. This paper mainly explores the disadvantages and disadvantages of oral English teaching in universities. This paper will first analyze the present situation of oral English

6、 teaching in China, it includes the good points and strengths of oral in China. But as a second language in China, though English are widely taught in almost every school, there are also many problems in oral English teaching. As for problems and disadvantages, this author puts forward some suggesti

7、ons and solutions on how to learn oral English. After finding the problems, we can solve those problems effective. Whats more, it is necessary to keep the progress we have made. Universities Oral English teaching need to be more creative, as well as need revolutions now. Oral English teaching requir

Introduction “As we all know, English has become more and more important all over the world. It has become an

11、 international language. With the development of China, English, particularly oral English plays an irreplaceable role in economic growth, political progress, and cultural exchanges and so on. So it is necessary for us to study” (Zhangcuiling, 2010). English well, especially for college students. To

12、 be successful, English has become a necessary tool. English is one of the worlds most widely used languages. Nowadays, with the continuous development of commercial economy, English is a bridge of communication among counties. In China, after the reform and opening-up policy, our English education

13、scale constantly expands and the education has achieved remarkable success. Many people from different countries and regions are studying English, it is necessary for students to study English well. Since the beginning of the 1990s the Chinese authorities have been concerned about the low level of c

14、ommunicative skills in English. Given the aim that most English learners in China are to use English for purpose of communication, it was agreed that assessment criteria should focus more on oral English teaching. The result is that this will encourage more communicative language to be taught and le

15、arned and lead to an increase in the standard of English across the country. In the last decade English language teaching in China has undergone changes. But through those changes, we can see some advantages and disadvantages of oral English teaching in China. In this paper,the author analyzes the a

16、dvantages and disadvantages of oral English teaching in universities. 2. Main Advantages of Oral English Teaching As a country with the largest English learning population in the world, China has been deeply involved in English teaching for decades. So during the process of English teaching, univers

17、ities has some useful experiences of it. There are about three main advantages oral English teaching in China.2.1 Group studyGroup study is the main advantages of oral English teaching in China. Group study means that the whole team is divided into several study groups,and decide the leader and the

18、recorder. Make sure that each study group finishes assigned tasks together before the oral English classes and finally present the assignment in different ways in the class as a group that every student can participate in the oral presentations and every student have a chance to speak out English to

19、 improve their ability of language expression in English. Universities in China have adopted it as a main way of teaching oral English. That is because students in the same class have the same age and level of knowledge, has the same study experiences. So it is easy for them to receive and exchange

20、information with each other. Group study can make the students take part in the oral English classes and communicate with their partners and group members and increase their chance to practice their spoken English so that students can speed their process of mastering communicative skills of English.

21、 As to group study, many experts and scholars think that it is a way that can fit any study styles and it is also the most effective and famous way that can have students take an active in oral English learning. 2.2 Foreign teachers As Chinese student often subconsciously turn to mother tongue for h

22、elp when they are thinking, they will be influenced by Chinese. Using this English will often result in the failure of communication or barriers. English learners must have a real English environment, foreign teachers have the correct pronunciation of English. Foreign teachers also can give the good

23、 English atmosphere for students to learn and imitate oral English, so they have the advantage. Many experts say that listening is not a process of receiving but also a process of building. Students just listen to what the foreign teacher said, then thorough imitating and understanding will determin

24、e whether student can speak good oral English, During the imitation, students can know how to pronounce English words correctly, then students will open their mouths and are willing to speak out and communicate with foreign people, finally it is possible for students to speak English fluently and co

25、rrectly. In foreign teachers oral classes, students can learn authentic English. Teaching America and British culture is also very important, the more you know the culture of English-spoken countries, the better you can learn English. Foreign teachers will also tell the students cultures and some id

26、ioms and their different teaching styles of their own country, and it is good for students to understand the true ways to express and get rid of the influence of Chinese atmosphere and form the habit of using English to express themselves directly, then students get used to think in English. If stud

27、ents do not learn those cultures, English means a brunch of meaningless symbols and it is difficult to know how to use English correctly. So oral English class not only means learning oral English, but also students should widen their horizons and learn culture, customs and life-styles of English-sp

28、oken countries. This method is widely used in the universities in China.3. Main Disadvantages of Oral English TeachingStudents in China generally start to learn English when they are in grade 3. However, most of the universities students find it hard to express themselves correctly in oral English.

29、“Whats more serious is that this situation will not change much even when they finish their two years compulsory English study in the university with a compulsory vocabulary of about 4000 words”(Guoxiaohua,2008). In general, there are four disadvantages of OET in universities.3.1 Single ways in Engl

30、ish ClassesWhen few teachers in China have students do pair work and group work in oral English classes, they only focus on few simple words and sentence patterns, then let students repeat them. It seems that the interactions between teachers and students are active, but actually they do not exchang

31、e information during the process, teachers put forward a question and students answer it. Students have little chance to express their thoughts in English and practice their oral English. The materials that the teachers offer are not realistic, whats more, scenes set in oral English classes are virt

32、ual, students may find that most of conversations in the listening exercises are far from their real lives and sometimes teachers just let them do a lot of listening exercises and pay little attention to the communicative skills and lots of students may do very well in listening exercises but when i

33、t comes to real conversations in real life they do even worse. When students come back to the real life, they cannot speak English fluently, so it is hard to motivate students passion for English.3.2 Few chances to communicate with people aroundIn China, students speak Chinese in their daily lives a

34、nd they lack the chance to communicate with native speakers and practice oral English in the daily life. For a long time, universities have paid little attention to oral English teaching and students do much better in tests. Although enthusiasm for English education continues to grow in China, Chine

35、se students competence in oral English is still not satisfactory in general. At present, most colleges set two or three periods weekly of an integrated English course for English majors, which content contains listening, speaking, reading and writing. Oral English teaching has always been a weak poi

36、nt in college English teaching. Although there is one weekly period for oral course, teachers just let the students do some listening, and they do not the chance to have a real conversation to improve their communicative skills. As we know the more one practices the language, the better one can spea

37、k. Whats more, importance is focused on grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing and listening in mid-examinations and final examinations.3.3 Little attention was paid to oral English The most terrible problem is that the teachers face is the lack of confidence and unwillingness of opening their mouths

38、 to speak English, resulting in the lack of vocabulary. This makes the students less active in activities in oral English classes. Many students are afraid of speaking English out, and they fear making mistakes and being blamed by teachers. This kind of fear prevents them from speaking English willi

39、ngly and also taking part in activities. Incomplete System of Examination Foreign language teaching in our country is affected very much by the baton of examination system. As we know, CET-4 or CET-6 lacks comprehensiveness. On the one hand, it only focuses on the check of the listening, writing and

40、 reading abilities of the students rather than the check of the students oral abilities; on the other hand, it only offers the sole and exact choice while ignores the openness of the answer, multiple choice covers about 80% of the whole papers. These two aspects have a very negative effect on oral E

41、nglish teaching. Moreover, the more attention paid by the authority further intensify the effect. Generally speaking, where there is a test, there is test-based English teaching. Since the results of CET-4 has been stressed too much by every high school, including the students, teachers and all leve

42、ls of leaders. Many teachers would naturally attach their teaching aims to the national test, that is, the teachers only teach and the students only learn what will appear on the test paper. Though teachers in China on the whole begin to realize the importance of Oral English Teaching and try to cat

43、ch up with the new trend, there are some major obstacles in carrying out the oral English teaching in Chinese universities(Cook.V, 1996).The educational system used to pay little or no attention on developing students communicative competence. Most universities dont have any requirements for oral En

44、glish and theres even no oral English class available for students (reading, listening and writing only). Most undergraduates spent most of their time in passing Band Four College English Test (CET). CET is a test mainly focusing on evaluating students ability of reading, listening and writing (no s

45、poken English test. A final failure in passing the Band 4 could result in an ultimate failure in obtaining the degree after four years study. For this reason, most undergraduates have to spend most their time in polishing their reading, writing and listening skills(Guoxiaohua,2008).4. Ways to Improv

46、e and Reasonable Solutions4.1 English only in English classesOnly in a natural language environment can one learn a language well. Nowadays the great obstacles that Chinese students are facing are the lack of natural English environment and so they have few opportunities to practice their oral Engli

47、sh. Students in China hear English most from their English classes. So during teaching English, teachers should arrange classes in English teaching. Teacher can slow down the speed they speak English and repeat what they say. Teachers can use their synonyms to explain the new words meanings so it is easier for students to remember and use new English words. Use different sentence patterns to express the same mean
