1、 The difference between oral English and written EnglishThousands of years ago, language was created by our ancestors in the form of verbal expression, which means people could rely on mouth and ears to communicate with each other. Later, characters were invented, with which oral English could be pu
2、t down in writing, thus forming written English. Although oral English and written English are both used for communication, there are some differences between them.Firstly, oral English and written English involve different language skills. Oral English involves two language skills, listening and sp
3、eaking, oral English require speaker use correct tone, accent, eye contact and proper body language. Whereas written English involves the other two skills, reading and writing. Written English requires the accurate use of words in writing. Briefly speaking, oral English is fluency based, while writt
4、en English is accuracy based. Secondly, oral English and written English involve different procedures. Oral language contains two procedures: “speaking” and “listening”. “Listening” is a procedure to comprehend speech, while “speaking” is a procedure to transmit thoughts orally by language. Oral Eng
5、lish is for listening, while written English is for reading. Because 1istening is linked to speaking, speakers may speak while thinking and they can even blurt out with out thinking. Reading is linked to writing, so writers can leisurely weigh and carefully polish their words. Therefore, oral Englis
6、h cant be completely consistent with written English. The sentences that used in written works are usually welled formed in a way that of natural, spontaneous talk are not. Thirdly, oral English and written English involve different styles. oral Englishis often used to communicate with others in rea
7、l daily life, while written English is the language which is used to communicate with others in a more a formal situation. Therefore, oral English is informal while written English is formal. In daily life, people tend to choose some easy and simple words in the oral English. Then there are lots of
8、slang and vogue words being used in oral English. On the contrary, in written English, the choice of vocabulary is more academic and professional. For example, phrasal verbs such as get up, put into, find out that are often used in oral English, when they used in writings, they should be replaced wi
9、th more formal single verbs such as rise, contribute and discover . Besides, the oral English fillers do not appear in the written language, such as “well” “you know”“I mean”. Fourth, oral English and written English involve different sentence structure.In written English, complex and compound sente
10、nces are common. Written sentences also tend to be longer.In oral English, however, sentences are usually simpler and shorter.Written English also usually uses standard grammar and sometimes rhetoric features. In oral, non-standard subject-verb agreements, ellipsis of auxiliary and/or subject, non-s
11、tandard word order, fragmented sentences etc. are all very common. To sum up, the differences between oral English and written English are decided by the conditions in which they are used. Although they are different style variations of the same language, only if we can grasp their different features can we use them properly and correctly.
