1、论语及英译,论语是孔子和弟子的论和语。论指的是议论,语是告知,使人有所觉悟。论语收录了孔子的主要观点,包括政治观,教育观,经济思想观,宗教观,以及对人与事的评价。论语共二十章,四百九十三篇,两万字。宋朝的宰相赵普曾说:半部论语治天下。,论语的推介(1)这是塑造良好国民形象的有效手段。(2)当今世界迫切需要儒家思想倡导的价值观。走向全球伦理宣言 己所不欲勿施于人 人道原则-己欲立而立人,己欲达而达人,2孔子生平 孔子名丘,字仲尼。吾少也贱,故多能鄙事 五十一岁时,被任命为中都宰。小司空,大司寇 仁政德治,孔子主要思想 仁 仁者爱人。能行五者于天下,为仁矣。恭宽信敏惠。恭则不侮,宽则得众,信则人任

2、焉,敏则有功,惠则足以使人。夫仁者,己于立而立人,己欲达而达人。仁者必有勇,勇者不必有仁。人而不仁,如礼何?人而不仁,如乐何?志士仁人,无求生以害仁,有杀身以成仁。,首先,在思想上要树立爱人类,爱他人的观念,即仁德观念。仁,爱人;泛爱众;四海之内皆兄弟 亲亲而仁民,仁民而爱物 仁德另一个含义与人的自我修养有关。克己复礼为仁;非礼勿视,非礼勿听,非礼勿言,非礼勿动。仁在国家管理上的体现就是德政,而不是苛政,具体体现为富民(惠民)政治和教民政治。,礼 不学礼,无以立。博学于文,约之以礼。克己复礼为仁。非礼勿视,非礼勿听,非礼勿言,非礼勿动。礼之用,和为贵。君使臣以礼,臣事君以忠。上好礼,则民莫敢不

3、敬。,礼 礼乐文化以礼为主,以乐为辅。所谓礼主要指的是周礼。周礼是周族从父系家长制时代以来逐步形成的典章,制度,仪节,习俗,包含了周人的习惯与道德。在这样的国家里,由于存在血缘关系的纽带,上下左右的关系不光靠法律来调整,维系,尤其要靠道德来调整,维系。那个把法律,道德,礼仪,习惯等等集于一身的东西就是周礼。所以周礼不仅仅是周朝的礼仪,还代表西周以来传统的宗法等级制度。,礼有两个重要原则,其一是尊尊,就是把人区别分为许多等级,并保持低贱者对尊贵者的尊崇,承认贵族的特权。尊尊首先是尊君,臣的义务就是服从君子。礼的另一重要原则是亲亲,即对亲族的爱,它包括父慈子孝兄友弟恭。不过孔子强调的是子对父母的孝

4、顺和弟对兄长的恭敬。,尊尊是等级制和君主制原则,亲亲是宗法制原则。为了对此予以维护,孔子提出“正名”的主张。名不正,则言不顺,言不顺,则事不成,事不成,则礼乐不兴,礼乐不兴,则刑罚不中,刑罚不中,则民无所措手足。周礼规定了人的身份地位,正名即是用一个人的名分所规定的义务去要求他,使他的言行与名分相符。,乐,不仅包括演奏,歌唱,还包括舞蹈。从人的修养来说,礼是从外部对人的约束,乐是从内心诱导出的对社会约束的衷心认同。用礼来治身,就有庄严恭敬地外貌与行为。用乐来治心,平易,慈爱,诚信的心情便油然而生。礼乐的配合,既保持人内心的平衡,也保持了社会秩序的稳定。兴于诗,立于礼,成于乐,礼是代表外在的规范

5、,而仁代表内心的自觉。儒家强调一切依礼而行,即使动机是爱,也不能逾越礼的规定。孔子的理想是仁礼结合。,君子 孔子认为:质胜文则野,文胜质则史。文质彬彬,然后君子。君子还应讲求忠恕:己所不欲,勿施于人。君子道者三:仁者不忧,知者不惑,勇者不惧。君子矜而不争,群而不党。,君子喻于义,小人喻于利 君子忧道不忧贫 君子欲纳于言而敏于行 君子有三戒:少之时,血气未定,戒之在色;及其壮也,血气方刚,戒之在斗;及其老也,血气既衰,戒之在得。,教育观念 学在官府 弟子三千,身通六艺者七十二 自行束脩以上,吾未尝无诲焉 有教无类 子以四教:文,行,忠,信(文,行是指文献知识和礼乐技能,而忠,信则属于道德修养范畴

6、)礼 乐 射 御 书 数,因才施教:中人以上,可以语上也;中人以下,不可以 语上也。启发式教育:不愤不启,不悱不发。言传身教:其身正,不令而行;其身不正,虽令不从。学习的态度:知之为知之,不知为不知;知之者不如好知之者,好之者不如乐之者。学习的方法:温故而知新 学而不思则殆,思而不学则罔。,仕而优则学,学而优则仕。(优指的是有余力)读书做官;天下重英豪,文章教尔曹。万般皆下品,惟有读书高;学成文武艺,卖与帝王家 书中自有颜如玉,书中自有黄金屋。洗洗头,做王侯;洗洗腰,一辈更比一辈高;洗脸蛋,做知县;洗腚沟,做知州。,论语风格 1.词约义丰,哲理深邃,大部分内容是以口语形式出现的对话,反映了孔子

7、的哲学观,政治观,宗教观,道德观和人生观。三思而行 朝闻夕死 三省吾身 诲人不倦 欲速则不达 小不忍则乱大谋,2。语言生动,大量使用排比,对偶,比喻,反问等修辞手段。学而时习之,不亦说乎?有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎?人不知而不愠,不亦君子乎?子曰:“吾十有五而志于学,三十而立,四十而不惑,五十而知天命,六十而耳顺,七十而从心所欲,不逾矩。”非礼勿视,非礼勿听,非礼勿言,非礼勿动。智者乐水,仁者乐山。知者动,仁者静。智者乐,仁者寿。子曰:“君子周而不比,小人比而不周。”,君子怀德,小人怀土;君子怀刑,小人怀惠。质胜文则野,文胜质则史。三军可夺帅也,匹夫不可夺志也。鸟之将死,其鸣也哀;人之将死,其言也

8、善。其身正,不令而行;其身不正,虽令不从。君子和而不同,小人同而不和。四体不勤,五谷不分。,为政以德,譬如北辰,居其所而众星共之。宰予昼寝。子曰:“朽木不可雕也,粪土之墙不可朽也。”子在川上曰:“逝者如斯夫!不舍昼夜。”子曰:“岁寒,然后知松柏之后凋也。”割鸡焉用牛刀 君子之过也,如日月之食。过也,人皆见之,更也,人皆仰之。,总的来说,孔子比较讲求适度的文采。“巧言令色,鲜矣仁”;“言之无文行而不远”以上两句表现了他对语言文采的观点,朴实和文雅要兼备相称,配合适当。,译者与译本简介 理雅各(James Legge-Chinese Analects)是英国人,曾代表英国基督教派任香港的一学院院长

9、,一生翻译了很多中国经典著作,是迄今为止翻译中国典籍最多的西方汉学家。,当时的传教士研究和译介儒家经典有两个主要原因:了解儒家思想,了解中国正统思想形态,了解中国,找出其与基督教义相通之处,更好地传播基督教。,我将大量的汉学知识置于这部译作中,这是长达二十五年的辛勤劳动的成果。这样做是很有必要的,因为这不仅使世界各地的人了解这个伟大的帝国,而且还能使我们在中国人的传教事业取得有效而且持久的意义。我认为把儒家的全部学说都翻译出来并加以注释出版,这将给以后的传教士以极大的便利。,理雅各译文的三大优点:(1)理解透彻;进行了大量的考证,以朱熹的评注为蓝本,广泛参阅了大量诸家的见解。(2)紧扣原文,语

10、义翻译。在达意的基础上力求形似。(3)译注结合,凸显学术性。注解篇幅大于译文。他的译本中注解占了几乎一半的篇幅,包括很长的导言(prolegomena),介绍孔子生平,儒家思想以及他对儒家学说的总体评价等,因而在当时的西方具有极高的学术价值。缺点:行文呆板,误解误译,语篇缺乏衔接。,智者乐水,仁者乐山。知者动,仁者静。智者乐,仁者寿。L:The wise find pleasure in water;The virtuous find pleasure in hills.The wise are active;the virtuous are tranquil.The wise are joy

11、ful;the virtuous are long-lived.在词性选择,次序安排和句式铺排上几乎与原文完全一致。,刑罚不中,则民无所措手足。L:When punishments are not properly awarded,the people do not know how to move hand or foot.G:When punishments are not properly awarded,the people will be at a loss to know what to do.,辜鸿铭 辜的文化观包含了两个方面:一是强烈批判西方的物质文化和道德沦丧,二是激励宣扬中

12、国文化的优越性。他号召西方人民把目光转向东方,转向中国,来寻求他所谓的“良民宗教”以拯救自身,即中国文化。,首先,辜英译儒经的目的是让西方人感受和认识儒家思想的魅力。辜鸿铭在论语的译序中指出:受过教育的有头脑的英国人,但愿在耐心的读过我们的译本后,能引起对中国人现有成见的反思,不仅修正谬误,还要改变对中国人,无论是个人,还是国际交往中的态度。他希望通过对儒家文化的介绍,能改变西方人对中国的蛮横态度,抛弃欧洲“枪炮”和“暴力”文明。他在中庸译序中指出:绝大多数人都认为在中国,旧的秩序在消亡,他们欢呼新知和进步文明进入中国。但我个人却不认为在中国古老的秩序会过时,因为我知道旧式秩序,中国文明和社会

13、秩序是一个道德文明的真正的社会秩序,它符合事物的本性,因此不会消亡。,译本的优点:(1)理解深入,意译为主。(2)流畅自然,各自成章。(3)尊重读者,引发共鸣。用西方哲学家的思想来比拟,给西方读者带来亲切感,更有利于弘扬儒学文化。缺点:(1)过分意译,好随己意;(2)删除专名,弄巧成拙;(3)多处误译。,父在,观其志;父没,观其行。G:when a mans father is living,the son should have regard to what his father would have him do;when the father is dead,to what his fa
